Does anyone have an opinion on closed vs. open chocks?

If my bow pennants did not run through the gated stainless + bronze chocks that came with the boat, I might consider the closed model you show, because I would not want the pennant jumping out of the chocks and chafing.

That said, for the stern, I deal with the open chocks for my dinghy painter, even through the line jumps out from time to time when underway.

It depends on whether or not you lock your prop, or tiller vs. wheel.
In my limited experience, I prefer the open chock as it is easier to use.
Perhaps in a boisterous anchorage the closed chocks would be better, but we have been lucky enough to avoid that situation - so far.

Another option. Unlikely a line would come out of this chock accidentally (given the horizontal force) but still easy to remove intentionally.
