Nice heavy weather tutorial

Post by David Morton »

As I sit watching the 45 kt gusts blow outside, I reassess my preparedness for heavy weather sailing... and find it wanting! Thinking about heaving-to in a cutter rig with self tending staysail and roller furling jib, led me to check what was being suggested by the internet experts. Thus I came upon this video, complete, succinct, and informative. I offer it here to those interested. It runs a little long, about 90 minutes. The suggestion that heaving-to under reefed mainsail alone for Marconi rigged sloops and cutters was particularly useful and I look forward to testing these techniques come Spring. Also includes a thorough discussion of use and deployment of sea anchors in conjunction with heaving-to. Well done, Maryland School of Sailing!!
