Oil filter Vs. Oil Screen
One of the many things that puzzle me about our Yanmar engine is the total lack of an oil filter. How common that? I would think that a diesel would need oil filtration more than a gasoline engine. On our YSM8 there is a thing that Yanmar calls an "Oil Screen" (shown below) All the manual tell us to do is turn it before starting the engine. Once, twice, a dozen times? They don't say. I turn it a few times, but It is now 35 years old. I would think that some sort of cleaning would be a good thing. Does anyone know? I would hate to take off that cover plate and have springs and small parts flying about the cabin on their way to the depths of the bilge. Has anyone retro fitted an oil filter?

If you scroll down a little you will find a post from October 2012 by "Maine Sail" who frequently posts expert advise on this board. He provides good information about the oil "filter" on the YSM8. He refers to it as a "cleanable" filter.

Jim,
Now you have me smiling. I think you must have had things flying into the bilge before. I know I have. God only knows what is down there.

Things flying into the bilge don't worry me too much - I have a long magnet and a long grabber for such occasions.
Things flying overboard? Well, that's a different situation entirely, particularly in the cold, often murky waters of the north. This is one of the reason I carry a lot of spare parts.

Oh, I have magnets, mirrors, grabbers and all sorts of exploratory tools for probing the bilge, but the magnets won't pick up those little stainless steel parts. A small shop vac seems to get most things, just be sure to empty the bag BEFORE you try to pick up small parts.jen1722terry wrote:Things flying into the bilge don't worry me too much - I have a long magnet and a long grabber for such occasions. . . .Terry
