Engine Mounts in CD 36

Post by Jeff Peterson »

Does anyone have experience replacing the mounting points for a Perkins 4108 in a CD 36? The engine struts are welded into a pipe that is then fiberglassed to the hull. But, the pipe is corroding. What is the best way to connect the struts to the hull...another pipe? Thanks

If you search you will find a few posts on this subject. I showed how I took care of it in a post "Rusted motor mount frame" I'm not quite sure how to post a link but it should show in a search.

I swapped out the rusted steel engine bed on my CD36. I lifted & set the Perkins down in the cabin, cut the old engine bed from the hull with a Dremel & #543 bit, and had a local shop make a new identical bed from 316 stainless. Then I tabbed the new bed down on the old bed's footprint, and set the Perkins back on it.

I just took a few moments to look at the attachments and I must say that John Ring is a gifted cinematographer and clearly a capable caretaker for Tiara. The cruise from Cape May to Cape Cod on YouTube is very well done. I pulled a lot of 289's out of my brothers Mustang and 440's out of his Coronet with a come-along chained to a tree in my teens. Johns use of a gantry is clearly a much better method and lacks the feeling of impending doom which we can all do without.

I must also applaud K Chiswell for the work he did on his engine bed. It is so simple and neat it looks elegant. In industrial applications those components which look simple are often the most efficient and robust. New Song is in good hands.

The previous owner of my CD-36 replaced the mounts using the approach now used by Robinhood. He bought the integrated engine mount/well from RH. It's essentially a fiberglass engine well with engine mounts. Given it is designed for the RH boats that are built using the old CD molds, it fit with minimal modifications - it was done when also replacing the motor. I have no idea on the cost, but the work was done by Deatons in Oriental NC.

Thanks Jim, much appreciated.

Our recent Marblehead to Halifax race was another great Cape Dory adventure; summarized in the image below, and uploaded here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmrrJWgWNuI
