Spartan outboard motor mount modificaton

Post by s2sailorlis »

In prior posts some folks have asked about modifying the Spartan mount so the motor sits a wee bit lower...

Attached is how the PO of my CD22 modified the mount. On this CD the transom is higher than the Typhoon if course, and the engine used is the ever classic 2 stroke Tohatsu ultra/extra long shaft - 25 inches.

The hardwoos block was replaced with a piece of aluminium sandwiched by two Starboard blocks, and as you can see the top has a cutout on top of just under 2 inches.

With motor mounted, the waterline is about 2-3 inches above the cavitation plate at rest. Under mid-high throttle she digs in even deeper.

Only issue with the Starboard/Aluminum block setup is the vibrations. It seems to transmit vibrations a bit more than perhaps a wood block..but then again it might just be some harmonics from my 20 year old tohatsu...

Can you still stead with the motor notched down like this I'm running a 2.5 merc. To reverse I have to spin the motor around.

StarBoard is pretty slippery stuff. Any special modifications to ensure the outboard stays put?

I made a starboard motor mount for the rail in the past. The motor has "grippers" which dent the starboard and give it really good "gription."

I've made a few random starboard parts for my power boat that couldn't accept slippage. I used a spade drill bit of the same diameter as the washer- I drilled into the starboard only the thickness of the washer so the washer dropped into the recess. You could easily do the same for the outboard clamp. It would also ensure your motor was always centered on the pad.

A picture might help. This was a crude test rig for a wave shaping device for wake surfing (youtube the sport if you aren't familiar). The rig allowed us to change out various shaped appendages underwater and ensure they were aligned correctly each time:

Jim, no mods just tightened securely, an outboard lock and the weight keeps it stablr
