After many years I finally have a boat again. Not a CD but a Sea Sprite 23 (Alberg design.) I'm hoping someone at this active and informative site can help me with advice about bottom paint. The hull is in good condition, no rough spots, no paint buildup. It has a self-ablating paint (interlux product, I think) that is wearing thin in spots. I need advice about repainting (the technology has changed alot in the past 25 years!)How much do I need to sand? How long does this stuff last? Any advice would be much appreciated.

>>How much do I need to sand?<<
A light sanding is recommended, although with a clean bottom, I've done just fine with no sanding at all.
>>How long does this stuff last?<<
It lasts as long as there's paint. Some use a different color for a base coat, then cover that with two more coats. When the base shows through, it's time to paint. No problem with the boat being on the hard, by the way. As a matter of ritual, I add a coat every spring, whether it needs it or not.

Congradulations!!!! Good boat with lots of fun....
With that type of paint...just a very light sanding. Kind of a piece of sand paper in your hand. Then a good rinse to get the light loose dust off. Let it dry and paint with an Abative paint like Interlux CSC Extra. Yes a bit more money but will not build up. You can keep it out of the water as long as you like...multi year.....really minimizes buildup over the years. Two to three coats. Big difference from earlier days....
