Thanks to all of you who responded with insight to my request for a comparison of the 25D to the 27 as a daysailor. We'll sail our Ty Senior for a least another season but hope to hitch rides on 27s and 25Ds over the summer to get a better feel for the boats. It appears that there are actually more CD30's in Chicago as a group compared to the other models so we hope to check that one out as well.
One follow-up question about the 25D and the 27. Is the size of the cockpit about the same? We want four adults to be reasonably comfortable though it's just the two of us most of the time. We do like to stretch out with an arm over the tiller at times. I've looked at the drawings from the product brochure. Not sure whether they're drawn to scale and pictures are influenced by choice of lens, the angle of the shot and other factors.
Thanks again.

I don't know about the 25D, but I can say that the 27's cockpit is quite roomy. We have group sails in the fall evenings with our yacht club, several boats with several people on each boat. 4 people are quite comfortable in our 27. We've had 8 people on board, 5-6 in the cockpit...kinda tight, but it's warmer that way.Is the size of the cockpit about the same?

i have been on both boats (although I have never sailed a 27) and I think, from memory, they are about the same! Not positive but pretty sure, and if there is a differance its not much. Anyway, I have had as many as 5 and 6 people aboard my 25D and as long as people stay out of the way when working the sheets, all went well. Four people in the cockpit that knew what they were doing when tacking, should poise no problem.
Hope this helps.

Re: CD25D/27 Followup
I currently sail a 25D and have found that cruising with three adults is ideal. It allows for the necessary gear shifts that have to be done down below when beds are made up at night (assumming the quarter berth is being used). With four onboard, I've had to shift gear to the cockpit for the night and cover it with a tarp. With two people on deck it allows one to rest down below, especially at night. Four will fit in the cockpit. There is room for people to change positions as the day goes on. Often we sit leaning against the cabin facing aft to stretch or legs (covering the instruments, ofcourse) or can sit up behind the tiller on the stern. So four fit fine and there is room to move around some.

I looked at both boats before settling on a 27. I found that price for a given age/condition to be nearly identical.
The actual cockpit is very very similar in size on the two boats, but there is, in a sense, more space on the 27 because of the aft lazarette. In fact, most of the length difference between the two boats is actually in the aft of the boat; the 27 has a longer aft overhang. This probably contributes to the "extra-pretty good looks" of the boat.
The thing is, guests can sit on the aft lazarette of the 27 while sailing, as long as you stay on one tack (the main sheet can partially obstruct). On my boat, which has the worm-gear wheel, the helmsman can also sit back there and steer!
It's sort of like a real low-riding version of a pushpit seat, and it contributes to an overall sense of spaciousness in the cockpit relative to the 25D.
In addition, no one mentioned that the 27 is 2000 pounds heavier- e.g. about 35% more displacement. Gives it slightly more comfortable boat motion through the water. In the words of my wife- "It just FEELS bigger than the 25".
That said, I agree with all posts that say that practically speaking the bow head layout of the 25 is better for one couple cruising.
PS- may I also suggest looking for a late model of either boat with the Westerbeke engine. The Yanmar YSM8 is very noisy and vibration prone!

Bob, Rita---
I have a 25D and I find that 4 people are comfortable in the cockpit until there is work to be done. If your sailing companions are participants --if they can help with the tacks or anticipate where to not be as you work the tack then 4 people still work. If your companions are ride alongs then I find 4 people are too many--it will feel like they are in the way.
