Air Draft for a 31C ?
I couldn't find this anywhere. Does anyone know the bridge clearance for a CD 31C ?

Depends on how much is installed at the mast top (i.e. antenna, etc.) Mine is 47 feet +/-, and I play it safe by assuming 50 feet clearance is needed.

Thanks Skip,
It's not my boat (yet), but he wants to know if he can "sneak' under a local bridge, that, at normal pool is 62' feet up. It looked okay to me, but he wanted to be sure. I loaned him a 100' tape today so he can get a better idea of the numbers for his boat. Thanks for the reminder about antenna.

And he's going to the top of the mast to measure? There are a number of alternatives.tjr818 wrote: I loaned him a 100' tape today so he can get a better idea of the numbers for his boat.

Oh Yes! I have gone under bridges where my antenna ticked the girders. Scary!

The tape is going to the top by way of the main halyard. No one has to go aloft.Neil Gordon wrote:And he's going to the top of the mast to measure? There are a number of alternatives.tjr818 wrote: I loaned him a 100' tape today so he can get a better idea of the numbers for his boat.

Re: Air Draft for a 31C ?
We went under a side span of the Newport bridge 44 years ago. Went in one side but couldn't get out the other. Managed to turn but couldn't get out the way we got in, either. Rising tide, naturally! This was in a Rhodes 19... the three of us managed to heel it over enough to escape. I think that was the last time I hitched a ride with two naval officers.sharkbait wrote:Oh Yes! Short version: "I think we can make it" is not the right standard!

Neil,
I see you have a CD28. I'm looking for the same information for my 28. Any idea what the height is from the water line to the top of the mast?

According to the CDSOA Membership Directory, it's 40 1/2' as designed. With antenna and Windex, and allowing for some wave/wake action, 45' seems safe.adamganz wrote:Neil,

Re: Air Draft for a 31C ?
Neil is correct. I have crossed under a approx 50 span in our 28.
Re: Air Draft for a 31C ?
Well, I just double checked the chart. That bridge has 55 feet of clearance.

Re: Air Draft for a 31C ?
Just remember that the charted clearance may be reduced by astronomically high tides (and vice versa for depth) ... in Boston that can knock a couple of feet off. Watch also for scaffolding and the like... the bridge might be under repair or whatever; something you might have missed in the Notice to Mariners.Rebinva wrote:Well, I just double checked the chart.
