Throttle, shift and engine shutoff cables for CD 31

Post by jen1722terry »

Hello Fellow Owners,

As Jenn and I continue on our cruise along the Maine coast and over to Nova Scotia, we have been trying to beef up our supply of spare parts. And, since we happened to be moored in Rockland for 2 days with a Hamilton Marine Supplies literally across the street, we thoughy we'd get a spare set of throttle, shift and fuel shut-off cables. The problem is, we don't know what length to order.

So, are there any CD 31 owners out there who have purchased one or all of these cable and know the lengths? We worry about specialty parts like this for parts in Nova Scotia are expensive (wicked tax) and ofter hard to find.

Oh, the engine is a Univ. M-25-5421 and the pedestal is the old Yacht Specialties model, not and Edson.

Many thanks, in advance.

How about taking the existing ones out and replacing them with new? Better to do it while sitting at the mooring than while rolling around in a storm. I know it's a bit of tearing the binnacle apart, but worth it. Some cables have the length printed on the outer sheath. Look along the cable run to see if you are lucky.

This is perhaps one part where new is infinitely better than having a spare onboard. For the $80 in parts cost, you get another 20 years of confidence.

If you can, install the quick release ends on the motor and transmission fittings. If you have a control failure, you can quickly shift and throttle by hand, using a verbal "telegraph". Done that before.

BTW, if you like hot dogs, go to Wasse's, which is near the harbor, behind the Dunkin Donuts on Main street. Best dogs in Maine!

Take a close look at the bracket that attaches the shift cable to the transmission at the same time. You may find it's in worse shape than the cable itself, and a harder part to get in a hurry.

Be careful. If this thread goes on for a while you might end up repowering.

Not to hijack the thread, but the repower is done and it couldn't be better. I lost 4 weeks in March due to weather, as it was mostly below freezing, but from there it went pretty much according to plan. Happy to share details with anyone contemplating swapping an MD7A for a Beta. (John Ring was of major help, by the way, as he did the same swap in his 28!)

The MD7A was sold to Joe DeMers at Sound Marine Diesel. Anyone needing a running MD7A or parts should give him a call.

Funny that you mention Joe DeMers. He's a cousin or something. My grandmothers brother was his father. It's a small world.
