CD 27 or CD 28 Sailboot

Post by Urs Kaestli »

I am interested in either a CD 27 or CD 28 sailboot. Can anyone help me with the following questions:

a) do they come with a tiller or a wheel?
b) saftey on board for a family with two kids age 6 and 8?
c) handeling in foul wheather?
d) ease of use for a sailer who has not owned a boot for 10 years?
(I used to sail a Dragon on Lake of Constance in Switzerland)
e) do they have an inboard engine?
f) I have never sailed a CD where can a get a feel for her?
(We live in Connecticut)
g) What price are these vessels going for in the second hand market
in good condition?
h) what are the negatives about either ship?
i) anything else I should know about?
j) maintenance cost per year?

Thank you for your help

Urs,

I can only speak for a CD 28 as I have never sailed a 27. I've owned my 28 for 3 years now and have sailed it 2000 miles in most conditions. Fandance has a tiller but I've seen another 28 with a wheel.
A> Safety with children depends on you, but if you can keep them on board, a 28 won't let you down.
B> The secret for foul weather is; reef early, shake it out late.Cape Dorys like to be sailed on their feet (up right) with no more than about 20 - 25 degrees of heel. Another plus for kids on board. I have sailed in 45 - 50 knots of wind on Fandance and have felt perfectly safe.
C> I went from a 12 foot "O day" to my 28. Nufsaid?
D> 27's and 28's all have inboard diesels.
E> I'm in Virginia so if your ever below the Mason-Dixon line give me a holler.
F> From a low of $17000 to a high of $29000 shop shop shop.
G> Negatives, All Cape Dories tend to suffer from gell-coat cracks on the decks due to in my opinion to much gell coat build up in corners.
H> You, if you are anything like myself, will fall in love with your Cape Dory
J> Maintance can be cheap or outragious. How good are you with your hands? My slip costs $1000 per year, hauling and painting $350. It's the toys for the thing that keep me broke.

I sail a CD28 but looked at a 27 as well. Both had tiller steering.

The 28 will give you more family space if you plan on cruising. The
27 seemed a lot smaller inside.

Either boat will keep you safe!

g) I live in florida, and am advertising my Cape Dory 28 sailboat for sale, due to a change in jobs; it is in good shape, is a 1980 model, and I am asking $23,900. Feel free to call me at (813) 632-3726 if you have any questions.
