What to do with old sails?

Post by swhfire21 »

I had a torn up genoa in the house to take measurements in preparation for ordering a new one. It did not take long for 2 of our 3 dogs to figure out what it was good for!

Thanks,

That's about as close to sailing our basset hounds will ever get. All three get motion sick in the car, so boating is definitely out for them.

Cut it up to make bags. For example, Sailrite just released a great video to make a market tote bag, which is a great project if you're new to sewing. I made one with my old mainsail, and some scrap sunbrella for the handles. It's a nice bag because it stands up on its own, making it easy to use. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEnaFutDodg

I have had a couple of seabags made from old sails. One was from my Typhoon mainsail and had the "TY" portion on the bag side. Gave that to my daughter in Utah, where they miss the Maine sailing, and she treasures it for good memories. The site below makes a free bag for the contribution of sail. Nice sea bags and quite a savings compared to their listed prices.

Good luck, Ron
