CD 33 Wheel Steering Chain & Wire Rope Kit advice
Greetings fellow sailors,
Has anyone replaced the wheel steering chain/wire on their 33 recently? I pulled the chain and cable after a strange change of the wheel angle last season - likely a result of backing into the mud and the chain jumping the sprocket. I figure it was a good idea to replace before a break similar to my brother's situation, posted on this board around 2011.
I'd like to know the specific Edson Chain & Wire Kit. I reckon it is the 774- 2S2B7 or 2S2B9, similar to what is on the CD36. I took the measurements for the chain and wire rope and figure I could get the parts for about 2/3 the cost from a few different suppliers but I like the construction of the kits especially the wire to chain fitting. Having those fittings done at a shop reduces the savings more. My old one looks fine save a meathook on the wire rope close to the bitter end so I'll have a pre made spare. I'll be talking to Edson but I figured I'd ask here first.
Thanks.

Paul,
I would stick with the Edson kit.
it is a devil of a job and once things are apart having a bad kit would turn the sky blue.
Budget about three and one half hours for the job.
Give me a ring and I will impart a few hard learned lessons.
Happy New Year matey!

Rit,
You are the man of the hour. I was just fixin' to decide. I figure building it would cost over 2/3 and the kit has the smooth chain cable transitions and new fittings and pull tool. I'll call Edson and order the thing.
I was hoping I'd hear from you on the high Atlantic. Where are you and LaVida now? Any chance we'll see some video or cruising pictures on the eye candy board?
I'm talking about your boat man…

Hey Paul,
Good choice. give the sheeves a good lookee see, mine were worn down and I needed to replace the sheeve axles. In addition I had some corrision on the main bracket that had to be removed and repaired.
Lavida is on the hard, awaiting her spring launch.
However I was able to take five weeks to sail down the East coast to Boot Key harbour on my friends Shearwater 45 schooner.
Lovely boat and an awesome trip.
We are planning on returning to Lake Superior this spring, with the intention of doing the North shore again, along with the Slates.
Perhaps we will sea u!
sea u, rit

Which kit # did you end up ordering? I'll have my steering apart for the rudder replacement- it seems like a good time to replace the chain and wire too.
Thanks,
Jeff

Re: CD 33 Wheel Steering Chain & Wire Rope Kit advice
Paul and Jeff… please get pictures of the two projects being discussed: the Edson steering wire&chain kit replacement and the new rudder replacement from Foss Foam. Those exact two things may be in the near future of my CD33, and it would help tremendously if I have precise info and photos of what and how these are done. Info on how much $$$$ each of these may end up costing will be greatly appreciated.
Jeff, if I may ask, where are you -the boat- located? And who will be doing the work to remove and install the new rudder? We do have some good yards down here, and I may only need to have the new rudder shipped to them. But I prefer having all the knowledge myself first, before letting a yard do whatever they want.
Thanks guys.
Zeida

Foss Foam did an outstanding job when I replaced LaVida's rudder two yrs. ago.
i was amazed at how quick it was delivered, fit perfect and she seems to steer better

Re: CD 33 Wheel Steering Chain & Wire Rope Kit advice
Paul, thanks for the link.
Zeida, I'm in Jacksonville. We are moving to the Annapolis area this summer so I'm getting the boat ready for the trip north. I'll be doing to work myself at Sadler Point Marina (the closest yard to our marina). I'll be happy to take lots of photos and will post what I learn along the way. My goal is to pull the old rudder this Friday to get the shaft measurements Foss Foam needs. They say they can have the new rudder made in about 2 weeks.
We initially pulled the boat because I had an external strainer on the engine water intake and it was obviously fouled. I wanted to remove it once and for all and install an internal strainer like it should have had from the beginning. Upon inspection though, the rudder issue was just too obvious to not address. No worries though- you just roll with the punches when it comes to boats.

You might want to look at this old thread regarding replacing the chain and cable for your quadurant:

Good heads up, George. Thanks for that.
Re: CD 33 Wheel Steering Chain & Wire Rope Kit advice
Zeida,
I'm planning to do this project in late April and will take photos for you. In pulling the cable and chain out, I did tape a messenger line to the cable ends before pulling out so I can pull them back through the small hole at the cockpit sole level. I have the Edson part linked to above and just waiting for the snow to subside. Might be a while yet, but with over 90% of Lake Superior iced over this year, launching season may be a bit late too! At least there should be plenty of water.

Rit,
Did you use the Foss Foam in California or Florida?

Re: CD 33 Wheel Steering Chain & Wire Rope Kit advice
Jeff,
The location in FL has the mold for the 33.
It is a fairly complex change out.
Send me your email address and I will send you some pics of when the yard did mine.
The uncovering and recovering the lower mount of the rudder is a lot of work and requires good glass work.
Making sure the quadrant will match your helm alignment is a tricky bit. Best done out of the water.
