New England Trip

Post by David Sabourin »

Two seasons ago I brought the Mad Hatter back up to her home waters of Rhode Island from Annapolis, Md. This was a two week trip that started from Cape May,NJ. This July, around the 4th, I plan to sail her back up and plan on about a weeks duration. She will be moored somewhere in Narragansett Bay or another anchorage close by. We will fly up to RI on weekends via Southwest which has real good rates. Then take a week to sail her back down to the Chesapeake over Labor Day week. I'm looking for some crew to share the adventure on the way up and back. Should be touching land at Cape May, possibly Atlantic City, somewhere along Long Island if an inland route is used and finally Block Island. We will make stops along the way wherever it makes sense. Anyone looking for some offshore experience on a CD36 should e'mail me for further info.
BTW, anyone knowing of moorings that are reasonbly priced in the eastern end of CT or RI, I would appreciate any leads.

Join up with "NOT SO TALL SHIPS 2000". I am working to put together a very large group of sail boats to sail along with the TALL SHIPS 2000 leaving Annapolis about June 25, N.Y for the 4th of July and Boston July 11. Have people looking to crew who do not have time to take their boat up and back. Will put you on my list and keep you informed if you are interested.

I'm would love the chance to sail a CD36 offshore, but we are looking into co-ordinating a CD sail-in the weekend the TALL SHIPs are in New London harbor (eastern CT.) Being that this would be around early to mid July. Soooo, it depends on it's and your schedules. Please add me to your list.
BTW, anyone knowing of moorings that are reasonably priced in the eastern end of CT or RI, I would appreciate any leads.
We live in Lisbon CT and sail out of Groton CT and am familiar with some local moorings and slips. These may have a high demand during the TALL SHIP's visit. Feel free to call; 860-859-9600 (H).

David:

I am going to be sailing a Hinckley Sou'west 30 I just purchased from Annapolis to Essex, Ct. this coming May. Since this is a voyage you have already undertaken, I wondered if you have any pointers. I wanted to do the trip in one week or less...is that feasible?

By the way, try Cove Landing Marina in Lyme, CT. for a mooring. It is located in beautiful Hamburg Cove on the Connecticut River, about 5 miles up from LISound. A beautiful and scenic place to keep your boat. Lots of salty, serious sailors in there. They do have available moorings for next year.

Cheers.

Sorry for coming in on an inquiry to someone else , but I may be of some help. I have made the trip up from the Annapolis area many times and would suggest the following; first night in Engineers Cove in the C&D canal, second night in Cape May Harbor, then over night off-shore around Montauk to the Connecticut River. If you use the currents in the canal and the Delaware Bay, this is a fairly easy trip that can be accomplished in four days. The weather is always the determining factor, but the prevailing winds out of the south make this the best way to go.

Brian,

What Jerry says is pretty accurate. He has a CD36 also. Last year we left Annapolis area about 5:00pm and arrived mid/canal about 11:00pm and slept 'till daylight. We stayed just across from Schaefer's. Made Cape May at 3:30pm with ease as we had fair tides with us most of the way. Even saw some dolphin just outside the canal.
We left Cape May at about daylight and made it to Block Island in about 35 hours as I recall. It's about 190nm to BI from Cape May.

You can duck into Atlantic City if the weather turns foul along the NJ coast. I've made this trip more than once.

As for your suggestion regarding marinas, I think that is a little off the beaten path for us. We will be flying into Prov on fridays and need to stay pretty close to keep the drive to a minimum. I would also like to do Cutty and Block on a weekend sail too. I don't think it would be possible from that far.

Good Luck on you trip....keep in touch if you like and we can compare notes,

David

ps no problem Jerry

No problem Jerry, I'm sure Brian can benefit from all our experences.

Haven't seen you in a while......will be in Rock Hall for Thanksgiving. Beth's brother manages a marina there.....Gratitude I think.

David:

If you are flying into Providence, the closest marinas are in Greenwich Cove on the west side of Narragansett Bay (and there are several). You may be able to take a taxi from the airport. Most of the moorings in the bay are in the East Bay, in Bristol, Jamestown or Newport.

We keep Remedy (CD27) at Bristol Marine (401-253-2200); I haven't seen the '00 rate sheet, but this year moorings were $550 for the season or $20 per night. Launch service is extra ($2 per trip) but there is a dinghy dock available. It is about a 40 minute drive from the airport.

From Bristol, we go to Newport for lunch, and Block Island and Cuttyhunk are reachable in a day - each is less than 40 miles.

If you prefer the West Bay, I will ask around.
