Bottom & Boot Top Paint

Post by Keith »

Hi All,

I'm starting to think about my first spring launch for "Moon Dance" 30C. I know a bit early since we just got dumped on hear in NE. I want to go with the traditional Brown bottom and Dark Brown boot top. The original owners manual states Rule Industries "Epoxy Cap" (no part #) for the bottom paint and Interlux 246 for the boot top. Since this information is 33 years old. Question #1 - Does anyone know who the current manufacturers of these equivalents are and what the part #'s are? Question #2 - What quantity will I need of each?

Looking forward to those great answers that I am becoming used to.

Epifanes Dado Brown is pretty close to the original for the boot stripe but it has been impossible to get brown bottom paint in the last few years. I was told by a paint manufacturer that mixing red and black will give an equivalent brown bottom paint, but I have not tried it yet.

I've used Interlux ACT for bottom paint. It is available in brown from Defender.

Keith,
Micron Extra comes in brown although a bit pricey. So far, I've gotten two seasons out of it and may even get a third. I'm in fresh water that may be a bit easier on it. I've used both Epifanes and Rust-Oleum for the boot top. The Rust-Oleum is available at Home Depot and quite inexpensive. Come on spring!!

x2 on the Interlux ACT. It seemed to be the cheapest brown I could find.

Thanks for all of your responses. I'll look into the Interlux ACT for the bottom and Rust-Oleum for the boot top.

Will Rust-Oleum be ok in salt water?

Do any of you CD30 owners know how much bottom paint I need? 2 qts, 3 qts, 1 gallon?

PS does anyone know why my original post was bumped by the webmaster?

I thought that no response meant that no one loved me anymore. :-)

I've used a gallon of the Micron Extra for the last 2-3 seasons on my CD30. It's held out pretty well, though last season I was thinning it a bit to finish :). I'd say plan on 2 qts. for a nice full coat.

I forgot to mention: I used about 4 1/2 qts last year of the Interlux ACT to cover my CD30. I may have stretched the first gallon too far and then needed to open on the next one to finish the jackstand spots and the very bottom of the keel on launch day.

No ideas on the bump, sorry.

Thanks for the inputs but there seems to be a discrepancy between 2 qts and 4 1/2 qts. I guess I'll by a gallon and see what happens.

A full bottom coat on a 28 takes about 3/4 of a gallon. 1 gallon should be enough for a 30.

I'd agree that 1 gallon would be a great place to start. The thickness of the paint makes a difference, too with regard to how much you use. I probably keep my coats a little thinner than most, because I'm trying to avoid buildup of the non-ablative paint. At the end of the season it seems that I have the same amount of growth on the bottom, whether I have thick or thin coats of paint so I've been opting for thinner :)
