I, when single, and we, since married have been sailing with a dog and then 3 dogs and now 2 dogs on board for the past 7 years. Dogs never go ashore from time we head south in the fall until we return in the spring. They do not even expect to go ashore when we go into a marina, which is seldom. They "go" on board on an astroturf door mat. Dogs must have a 'mark' to go on or to. So! when no one is looking, YOU go up and mark it, the dog will be right behind you. Ever try and find a place to take the dog ashore in the marsh country in many sections of the ICW in the Carolinas and Georgia? Good luck. Also, most marinas have a special area to walk dogs, loaded with mites, fleas, ticks and other diseases. We have had lahsa apso and cairn terriers.
