Simple Spring Stuffing Box Question

Post by wsonntag »

Its time to take an appropriate fraction of a turn on the engine stuffing box packing nut, it is leaking too much when under power, underway. Here's the question(s); The lock nut is the furthest aft, behind the packing nut - right? To loosen the lock nut I turn it clockwise - right? Then turn the packing nut clockwise too, to tighten - right? The snug up the lock nut. All turning motion referenced looking aft from the motor to the stuff box and stern tube.

Thank you very much in advance.

That's correct - assuming the packing is still usable and not excessively worn or hardened. You should have a few drops per minute running and no leakage static.
