HELP! Need Universal 18 info!

Post by Larry DeMers »

HI,

I have a friend that also owns a Cape Dory..his is a 28 and is new to him this fall. He is trying to understand the winterization procedure with the Universal 18, using the engine manual that he got with the boat. Unfortunately, there are no photos of the relevant steps (or engine for that matter) in the manual, which leaves him unsure of which Universal he actually has onboard..the 14, 15, or the 18. His engine seems to have the combined features of all three engines, but does nto match the manual for any one engine.

The questions are: Where is the engine identified at? Does anyone know of a source for a manual with drawings and photos to give an idea of what the critter should look like?(I speak of the various parts and subassemblies on the engine..not the engine itself ;^)). Is anyone willing to share their winterization steps with him -thru me. He has what appears to be a fresh water cooled engine with heat exchanger..but even this is uncertain at this time.
I have not seen the engine on his boat, so I will pass your info on to him as soon as I get it.

The boat is pulled out of the water now..and I am concerned that he is in danger of freezing the engine..which is not winterized yet (everything else is).

Thanks a lot,

Larry,

If it is the Universal 18, 14hp diesel, as I suspect it is, all he needs to do to keep it from frezzing is to run some antifreeze through the exhaust system. To do this, remove the seawater inlet hose right after the thru hull, insert the hose in a container of 50/50 antifreeze/water and run the engine until some is expelled out the exhaust. He could also drain the water lift muffler, there is a very small self taping screw in the forward lower end of it(replace the screw after draining it!) The engine itself should already have antifreeze in the freshwater side of the cooling system, but maybe he wants to check to make sure. He would probably want to change the crankcase oil and filter, along with the primary and maybe secondary fuel filters. Tell him to get filters from Universal, don't use store-bought, not worth the hassel! The engine zinc is a 1/4" pencil zinc located in the port, aft end of the heat exchanger. It requires a 7/16" wrench and a little contortionistic moves, but it can be changed from the front of the engine. The engine ID placque is located right on top of the engine, it should be in plain sight. As far as the manual goes, he should be able to get one from a Universal dealer once he identifies what engine he has.

So, Larry, it's getting cold up there in the North woods? It is here in Connecticut too, but I'm not ready to give up just yet. I'm just making arrangements with the yard to have Hanalei laid up in Ordinary on November 1st! I hate it when that happens, being on half pay for the winter is NO fun!

P.S. It IS possible that the engine is not a Universal. It depends on the year of the vessel, maybe it's a MD7A or something else, which is a whole 'nother story!

Dave,

Thanks Captain! I appreciate your help here. I felt a bit guilty in not being able to help this guy, as I taught him how to sail 25 years ago, and he bought the CD28 after spending a weekend with us last fall. But I have not ever touched a Universal 18, so i can only wave my hands and offer generalities (not a place I like at all).

I asked him to describe the engine, and it is definitely not an MD7A/B (that is the one I have and am intimate with on a regular basis..will have to tell my wife about that i guess). hee, so it's a Universal of some vintage and size.

I'll send your note to him now. If there are further questions, could I pass them along to you for additional consideration please?

There is one that I have actually. He noted a radiator cap on top of a small container that hold perhaps a quart of water. It also has a coiled up hose coming off of it..the hose just sticks up inthe air and is open. Is this familiar to you? He also mentioned a tee fitting in the incoming water from the seacock. I assume that this is for attaching a hose to for winterizing.

Thanks again Dave.

Re: More info.....

Larry,

Sure, if he has any questions, have him post them here and he'll get help from all of us with 30's. As far as the little tank that holds a quart of coolant, I think he is looking at the antifreeze reservoir. If it is on the port side, top of the engine, that's what it is. The coiled hose coming off the radiator cap is probably the overpressure relief line. Usually it is not coiled, so that is a little confusing.

As far as the "T" fitting in the seawater inlet hose, sounds like someone added it so they could run the engine when it is out of the water. If he hooks a garden hose to that (with a throttle valve) he will be able to run the engine up to normal operating temp. without seawater to cool it. Tell him to be careful if he does this though, he only needs enough flow to cool the engine, to much flow and he will flood the waterlift muffler and could get water into the cylinders. Don't start the flow until the engine is running to avoid this. A waterlocked engine will destroy a lot of things in a diesel, so caution is advised!

Another thing, to get antifreeze into the seawater side of the engine, he only needs to run it for a few minutes. If he disconects that seawater hose at the seacock, inserts it in a container of 50/50 antifreeze, runs the engine until he sees antifreeze come out the exhaust, he's done! The engine does NOT have to be at operating temp. to do this.

Re: HELP GIVEN..Thanks!

Post by Larry DeMers »

A few days back, I posted this request for help with the procedure for winterizing a Univ.18 engine. Several people responded immediately..and one in particular..Jerry Laudermilk, responded and sent a copy of the manual to my friend who was asking the questions. This manual contained the needed pictures to identify the engine and location of the various cooling system components. It was the really quick response and unselfishness of Jerry's actions that impressed both me and my friend. I would like to publicly thank Jerry, and the others for helping out in such a quick manner. It probably saved the engine from freezing damage, and gave my friend some peace of mind.

Thanks,
