Motor for Typhoon

Post by Jim Kingrea »

My Typhoon came with a British Seagull motor, well I've decided that it time to change to a real motor, with a reverse. I want a motor that shifts into reverse rather than turning the motor 180 degrees. The smallest motor with a shifter that I have found is a 5 horse. I am looking for a good used motor if possible. Will a regular length shaft work with the Spartan bronze motor mount or do I need the long shaft.
I am open for suggestions on makes of motors and size.

I use a Tohatsu 5hp with integral tank and long shaft. (You will need the long shaft!) Spec sheet says 44# however which is a bit heavy for the boat. It definitely provides more than enough power for my needs. I'd move down to a lighter 4 hp with only a neutral but for the times that we drop a hook and go ashore for lunch and then need the reverse to get the hook free. There are lots of posts about this issue.
Good luck,
Serge

If you search past postings there is lot's of imformation on outboards for the Typhoon. The consensus seems to be in the 3.5 to 4 hp long shaft, and as always there is a trade off,no reverse in this size of motor that I am aware of.

Check out the new 4 stroke Yamaha 4hp engine w/ internal tank. I think the price is around $900+
