Info. on Mail Order Boat Supplies

Post by John Pendergast »

I'm a new owner and have been bitten by the repair & replacement bug - running lights, hardware, lines, etc. I wonder if anyone out there has found some good catalogues i can order or on-line sites that have good collections of discount parts and supplies. I have a Typhoon Weekender that needs some odds & ends. Any thoughts?

The most useful are West Marine (www.westmarine.com), BoatUS (www.boatus.com) and Defender Industries (www.defenderus.com). I also often find good prices at JSI (www.jsisail.com)

All these suppliers have only limited websites; there is always more in the catalog. They also all match prices, so you can get the JSI's sale price on a product by walking into the local West Marine and showing them the flyer (I have done this a couple of times with no hassle and no questions asked).

West Marine, BoatUS and Defender are good sources but they all carry pretty much the same products. I'd recommend adding M&E Marine to your list since they carry some products that can't be found elsewhere. M&E has retail stores in New Jersey and Delaware and you can get their catalog by calling 1-800-541-6501, or via eMail at "catalog@memarine.com"

John - If you decide to join Boat/US then please note my previous notes on getting a 50% reduction in membership fees.

For strictly sail items of the best quality, I would recommend Performance Yacht Systems in addition to the outfits listed.

Just take your time. I have found that all companies mentioned above are fine.

If you need anything else for your Typhoon, I have found that Spartan has some items and Dwyer Aluminum Mast Co. has some others. I just had all of my rigging replaced by Dwyer and they did a prompt and quality job for what I consider reasonable prices.
