Recently our wind instrument failed to give wind direction. The wind velocity readout was still functioning properly. I purchased a replacement masthead unit for the dear price of $432, went up the mast and replaced the unit. All works well now.
When I examined the original masthead unit I found that the bearing on the wind direction portion had seized due to minor corrosion and dirt. After a liberal application of WD-40 and some minor manipulation the bearing was freed. The masthead unit now functions normally. . Had I not already purchased a replacement I would likely have reinstalled the original. Based on this experience I will make a note in my logs to clean the transducer with fresh water and a shot of WD-40 once a year.
We also replaced the existing bulb in our Tri-color light with a Dr. LED Polar Star 40 Tricolor replacement bulb. Sometime later this month we intend to test the bulb in Galveston Bay for the reported 2 NM visibility claim. Will advise the board further on that test.
Happy Sails to all
