I am looking to get back into sailing after a 20 leave of absence and am eyeing the Typhoon weekender. My desire is to keep the boat in the Osterville, MA area and do day sails with a random trip over night or maybe longer. Ideally I would like to trip out as far as Martha's Vineyard and the islands.
If there are Typhoon owners in the Cape Cod area with experience going to the islands I would appreciate your feed back.
Is the Typhoon a safe boat for the trip to MV ? Nantucket ?? Cutty hunk ??
Thanks in advance,
John B.

I brought my Typhoon down to Buzzard's Bay from Maine for the first time this summer. I've made a couple of long day excursions around West Falmouth, Marion, Mattapoisett, etc. Based on my limited experience, I would say the decision comes down to travel time, and weather. The Typhoon sails really nice and solid in most conditions, and has enough stability for me to get the family home safely if the wind gets up around 20+ knots with 4-6 ft chop (a frequent occurance on the south cape). I'm really happy with the Typhoon as a daysailor, and a boat that could go longer distances overnight, if conditions were favorable. I'm trying to plan a trip myself to Hadley's this fall. The other mathematical issue is that the short waterline of the Typhoon means slower passage times. It's somewhat discouraging watching 30-40 footers blowing you on their way to "exotic" destinations. The question becomes would you want to be able to travel in a broader range of weather conditions, and feel
secure and comfortable. If you're primarily going to daysail, and occasionally overnight in good weather, then the Typhoon is an excellent boat. If you want to do a larger amount of sleep over travel, I would go bigger-even if it's a CD-22 or TY Senior. My wife & I have thought this thru some, and we've decided to keep our TY for frequent daysailing, which is what we primarily like to do, and charter a bigger boat when we want to do a couple of overnights. I ran the numbers and it's really the least expensive combination.
