Bang Bang

Post by Don Sargeant »

So I'm thumping along at 2000RPM (Westerbeke 10/2) this Saturday and my wife says "it's so nice to have a reliable engine" when the thump thump thump turns into a bang bang bang. Not quite metallic and not quite explosive. There was no loss of thrust, just the distinct change of sound. I shut it off immediately. On Sunday the wind was blowing right down the channel again so I figured I try the engine again in hopes that the good fairy had fixed it overnight. He/she hadn't, but it started and ran fine albeit with the bang bang noise. Judging from past posts I may have a fouled injector. What king of additive, if any, can be added to the fuel like one would add to gasoline to free up valves etc. I've got some Diesel Treat in there now. Is it harmful to run it with a bad injector? I something worse wrong?

Don,

First, how long did you run the engine the second time, and was there an increase in operating temperature? If you did not fun for long and there was no increase in temp then:

As the eternal optimist I'd recommend you check the raw water cooling supply. The intake or strainer may be plugged, or the impeller may have failed. If the water supply to the muffler is interrupted or the volume is less than required the exhaust noise changes to a very sharp, loud sound. If the volume of water discharged from the exhaust pipe is less than normal, this is most likely your problem.

One other area to check is the water induction elbow in the exhaust system. The older cast iron units do not react favorably to the mixture of salt water and diesel exhaust gasses, and corrode quite badly. The unit will corrode to the point that the only thing holding the shape of the elbow is the protective wrap of fiberglass tape! Open the port locker, remove the plywood pannel and squeeze in for a look.

If you ran the unit for a considerable length of time, with no increase in heat I'd still check the above. If all is well in the raw water department, the price of poker just went up. I'll look in the trouble shooting portion of my manual tonight, and post the thoughts of Westerbeke tomorrow.

Best of Luck,

Lee

Are you sure the bang-bang was coming from the engine? I don't know what your drive is like on the 25D, but I had a similar sounding experience on my CD 30 last year and it turned out to be a problem with the retaining screws on the drive shaft working loose and hitting the bottom of the reverse drive housing with every revolution of the shaft. (I now have them wired, as they should have been in the first place). It was a thrilling experience.

Don...

The same exact thing happened to me about a month ago. I posted a notice on this board but it has been archived already. Search the word WESTERBEKE and you'll find it. I am 100% positive that it is an injector problem. They come out pretty easiley. I sent them both out and had them rebuilt for $120. They "POP" tested them before rebuilding and one was definitly bad and the other was marginal. Its not about them being dirty. It has to do with age and pressure at which it "Fires". I took my whole engin apart for no reason.

Hope this helps
