Universal M25 problems

Post by coachd »

I have a universal M25 on my cd31. All was well until the other day, when going from neutral to reverse the engine stalled. There is no problem with the engine starting and idling in neutral and going in forward, but it continually stalls in reverse. Has anyone had the same problem. Also, can you recommend a good marine deisel mechanic in the NYC area. Thanks.

At what rpm are you shifting? If I get down to 600 rpm my M25 tends to stumble and stall if I shift to reverse. I generally keep it at 1000 rpm while approaching my slip, go to neutral if necessary to keep the speed minimal, and hit reverse as I ease into slip. Also, make sure that your shifts are quick and positive - don't ease it into gear, this is harder on the clutches.

You may also check your cutlass bearing. I had to replace my because the rubber in it started to come away from the brass. The shaft would rotate one way only. I found this out while doing spring maintance .I went to rotate the shaft to put a new zinc on and noticed that it would only turn one way. The rubber in the cutlass was binding the shaft. You might try putting in natural with the engine off and try to rotate the shaft both ways by hand . See if binds up

I also have the same engine works great and never had that type of problem . Check your tranmission oil lever just to make sure.
