CD28's and the club foot jib.

Post by Bob Ohler »

Something occurred to me the other day while I was looking at other CD's... Can a CD28 equipped w/ a club foot boom fly a genoa headsail (a 150 or even a 130), or are you limited to the approximate size of a working jib? If so, how do you sail in light are? Also, is this the primary reason so many CD28 owners remove the club foot boom? (Thinking about that next boat) LOL

No you still need to hank the sail on to the -headstay.- ----I--n- --order to make it a cutter you need to add- --an---o--t-h-er sta-y

Russ, thanks for your reply, however my question was not "do you hank on the headsail to the headstay?" My question is,.... are you limited as to the size of the head sail you can use when you have a club foot boom?
Thanks,

You can easily fly a genoa, spinnaker, etc. You take down your self-tacking jib and hank on your favorite sail, leading the sheets through the appropriate blocks. The boom can be supported by its topping lift and the sheets led over the boom or it can be secured to the deck. It's more work than roller furling, but the failure rate is much lower. The club jib is great for close hauled sailing, but a change improves performance for other points of sail.

Bob, Unless you use the boom then you can put any size sail on. I have seen where some folks leave the working jib hanked on and attached to the boom but furled and sitting on the deck while they fly their genoas. You would need to run your sheet leads further outboard to fly anything bigger than 100%. These are usually on the toerail. I personally have taken the boom off. Last year I would fly my genoas until the wind piped up big and then I would put on the working jib. I still use the self tending rig which works great even loose footed. This year I put on roller furling so I removed the post that the boom attaches to and I will put another stay there. This will have a clip on turnbuckle that can be removed when it is not being used. Hope this answers at least some of your question.
