A Bad Experiance Shared

Post by Dennis Truett »

I post this message only to save fellow sailers frome a very bad and costly experiance... While motoring up the Hudson river on my CD26D, my inboard desile engine (Westerbeke 10-2) started to make a terrible metal to metal Knocking sound. I shut in down right away, (here comes the bad part) and got towed in by a very nice motor boater. Once back on the mooring, we started to trouble shoot. The engine would barly run. It had good oil pressure. It still had a very loud knocking sound. You could feel it through the whole boat! I had a buddy of mine listen to it a few days later, and the consenses was that any thing that made that loud of a sound would be easy to find and also very loose. I proceeded to take the engine apart since I have a lot of experiace with Gas motors. I took the pan off... The front timming cover off... and then the head off. I found NOTHING WRONG! My friend then consulted an experianed mechanic. He said right away FOULDED INJECTOR!. (I thought... TOO EASY... Is he kidding!!!) Just to be safe, I sent both injectors out and had them rebuilt.($120) Yesterday I completed reassembling the motor, and she once again runs like a charm. One good thing though, it now has all new hoses, filters, and belts. Also, I now know the engine pretty well if ever I have another problem. By the way, when I said costly... Head gasket $85.. pan gasket $35... Timming cover gasket... $35 dollars.

I kind of remember this old addage about a boat being a big hole in the water that you just through money into... The only saving grace is that it's a Cape Dory and well worth the trouble. Any experiances like this??? Please share.

Thanks for reading this!

Hmmmmmm. I had a similar thing with a Vetus 10 Hp. A loud knocking, but not like a piston sound. But mine went away. Now I have a 10-2 like yours and will keep my ears open. Thanks, Dennis, for this very helpful post.
