CD 25 Halyard & Sheet Lengths???
Hello,
I know someone is going to say, " Look in the manual ", and I have done so. My CD25 manual doesn't contain this information. So, if someone could tell me:
- main halyard length and diameter
- main sheet length and diameter
- jib/ genoa halyard length and diameter
- jib/ genoa sheet length ( total ) and diameter
- spinnaker halyard length and diameter
- spinnaker sheet lengths ( each side same ) and diameter
The halyards will run back to the cockpit, so I'll have to add length. The spinnaker sheets will go to a block near the stern and then run forward to a second set of winches I am installing.
Any idea of what lengths to add?
Also, I have a near-new asymmetrical spinnaker that was used on a CD 25D. Does anyone know if this will also fit the CD 25, or will it need to be trimmed?
Also, does anyone use a Shaffer Snapful on their CD25? I have the Shapfurl 500 that I'd like to use.
Any help would be appreciated.
I still have a CD 25D mast with standing rigging for sale. All in fine condition. $ 500.00. Includes foot, top and spreaders.
Thanks kindly,

For the lines I've replaced on my CD25, I've used the sizes for the 25D given on p94 of this manual: http://capedory.org/manuals/Ty-Ty%20Wkn ... 30-30K.pdf

I don't know diameters, because all of the running rigging on my boat had rotted...
I can say that the mast is 27 feet tall, because I measured it... if that helps...?

Instant Bubble-head. Just add water.

Masthead to deck is 27'7" and to the water is 31'6" from masthead to boom is 24' and from what I read you should have enough halyard to get to the water in case you need it to pull someone out of the drink. I wouldn't go with less then 65' of main halyard. I bought 70' of 5/16th I think 3/8" would be ok too.
The forestay pin to pin is 28' 3/4" long I ordered the same line for my jib halyard.
I use a single line for the jib sheet. It's probably about 45' of 3/8" line but that's just a guess.
I never measured my mainsheet, but when I got the boat I removed the old one and used a jib sheet on the boat as the main sheet because the one on the boat was too short to let the main out all the way. The one on there now has to be about 40-50' but that is a guess.
You can always buy a little more and cut it down, but you can never get it to grow.

Sheets and Halyards
I use 3/8" for both sheets and halyards, mostly because they feel good in the hand. For the Jib Sheet (100% Jib) I went with a singe line of 50 feet, using twice my boat length as a 'rule of thumb'. It works fine. 55 or 60 feet would give a little more line available on the leeward side, but 50 works. Main sheet is 45 feet, and is about right. I believe both my main and jib halyards are 60 feet.

Re: CD 25 Halyard & Sheet Lengths???
Apologies for the thread necro:
I'm redoing the sheets on my CD25 and shopping around. The PO had upsized to 1/2" for some reason and they don't play well with my rubber winchers. The manual lists 7/16 (for the 25 D anyway) but others recommend dropping down to 3/8" above.
Regarding lengths, any guesstimates on what's needed for a roller furled 135 genny? The manual quoted above lists 35', which I assume is non furled, or if paired sheets are used.

Re: CD 25 Halyard & Sheet Lengths???
Yes, my owners manual (fourth edition 1981) lists all running rigging for the CD25 as 3/8 except 1/4 for the topping lift.
Halyards are stated as 60' jib & main 50' and it appears the genoa sheet would be 60' if done as a single line. I generally add a few more...

Re: CD 25 Halyard & Sheet Lengths???
Can’t speak to the specifics of a CD25. But here is a start point for you to use as you determine lengths. Halyards are typically the length of the mast (keel stepped—so if it’s deck step add the difference) x 2 + 10’. Sheets are usually twice the length of the boat. Sheet and halyard diameter is based mostly on your ability to comfortably handle the line. Example. The halyards on my CD 36 are 3/8” or 10mm. My sheets are 1/2” or 12mm. For halyards you want low stretch though I get by just fine with prestretched double braid. No exotic halyards on the FR. No spectra or dyneema in sheets as the shockloading can damage your rig.
I would tell you there is no advantage to dyneema or spectra running rigging on a Cape Dory unless you are seriously racing it. I say that even though I have one spectra cored jib halyard. The reason for that is it was an impulse buy and my halyard diameters are light for my boat.
But 3/8” for sheets can also work and might be good for a CD 25. I use 3/8 for my staysail sheets and they seem fine.
