Volvo MD7A Transmission

Post by John D »

When I first got my boat, I had a problem with the transmission. It would make a squealing sound and take about 15-20 seconds to go int reverse. Forward seemed fine. After a Ya2K solution (Yet another $2000) I was told the assembly had been incorrect and so the trans was rebuilt. Now only a month or so later, the transmission squeals in reverse, although it seems to go into gear OK. Any ideas? Could something besides the transmission itself be causing this? I thought about checking the linkage to see if it is going all the way in gear because the lever under the compass may be bumping into the bottom of the compass. Any ideas on where to look and things to check is "mucho appreciato".

Mine makes a moderate squealing noise in reverse, and quite a few other older transmissions I know of do too. It may not be just right, but many people say not to worry too much about it.

I had the same squealing happen to my transmission on my CD28 a couple of years ago. Similarly, the squealing only happened in reverse. The mechanics found some loose set screws on the coupling between the transmission and the drive shaft. The screws will loosen if the alignment isn't spot on. At the same time I was also losing reverse gear fluid. Ultimately, the transmission had to be rebuilt. After 3 years, I've had no recurring squealing.
