Domain Name

Post by j2sailor »

Hi guys,
I've purchased several domains for a site that I'm starting to put together. It is specifically tailored for sailing and powerboat skippers, and offers tips and techniques on seamanship, boat handling and navigation.

I'd like your opinions on a domain name. I would think the shorter the better, easy to spell, say and remember. And, of course, describe the site. Here are some I've purchased. Any other thoughts are welcome:

www.skippertips.com
www.skipperadvisor.com
www.sailortips.com (too restrictive to powerboat skippers?)

By completely kneejerk reaction is that I like "skippertips." On the other hand, domains are cheap to buy (if you're first) and cheap to forward to somewhere else. So if you go with "skippertips" you could still have "sailortips" just forward to the main site. Can you add "boatertips" and the like to the list?

Thanks Neil,
I think you nailed it. It needs "boat" in the domain. I researched and purchased www.cruisingboatskipper.com That seems to fit the site concept even better.

I picked up http://www.bostonsailors.com a while ago. It's out there, not sure what I do with it but in the meantime it could be a blog of sorts and I've added some links, e.g., to here.

Let me know what you're up to and what you settle on and I'll add a link to you.

search terms

Post by Tod M »

I'm sure you know that you can add "meta name" keywords hidden in the web page source file to help it turn up in searches when the domain name itself may not contain the words that people may search on.

For example, a while back I started

www.PeppyPawsPoochPark.com

and included the following:

Ashland, Ashland County, Ashland County Dog Park, Ashland Dog Park, Ohio Dog Park, Ohio Dog Parks, PeppyPawsPoochPark, PuppyPawsPoochPark, PeppyPaws, PuppyPaws

If you go to Google and search for

Ashland Ohio Dog Park

or

Ashland County Dog Park

or

Ashland Dog Park

Peppy Paws comes up fairly high on the returns list. (no such luck yet with the misspelling Puppy Paws...... )

I'm definitely not an expert on the subject; that is just something I read. Probably you could read volumes on the topic of how to get a web page to be easily found.
