On to the next project (maybe). Given that the bedding compound behind
the teak eyebrow had perished (finished that job this weekend), I've
been looking with suspicion at bedding on the teak handrails along the
cabin top of my CD36. Before I go bashing around, does anyone know
how CD secured those handrails? If through-bolted, is there any way to
remove and replace them without pulling down the liner in the cabin?

How are deck handrails secured on CD36?

Re: How are deck handrails secured on CD36?
Larry,
On our CD32 the deck handrails are thru-bolted through the deck rail, the deck and the handrails on the inside of the boat. The nuts/bolts are hidden beneath wooden bungs. If you need to remove the rails, you have to drill out the bungs, or use a chisel, being careful not to damage the rails (you want to be able to re-use the old holes without re-drilling them). Once all of the bungs are removed, you can remove the nuts and bolts. This is a 2-person job since you need someone up on deck with a screwdriver and someone down below with a wrench. Make sure to use a bedding compound before re-installing the rails. You should be able to purchase new teak bungs from any ship's store. They come in a variety of sizes, but if you have to redrill the holes, make sure you drill holes in a size that the bungs come in. They then get glued in place and any excess wood is trimmed off and sanded smooth with the rest of the rail. The rails, of course, have to be refinished.

Catherine,
That's what I was afraid of. Of course, through-bolting is the right
way to secure such things, but I don't think I'm up to taking apart
the ceiling at this stage. Thanks for your reply.
