Boston Harbor Island Regatta - Results

29 boats finished in a fleet that was slimmed down due to weather in advance of the race, keeping many competitors away, and heavy fog and rain this morning, which further reduced turnout.

Meghan Welborn, CD Typhoon Senior - 15th
Chris Paszkowski, Rebecca Ann, CD28, 18th

Thanks, O J.

Unfortunately, the weather sidelined some very worthy Cape Dory competitors who couldn't sail the 20-30 or so miles of wind, waves and wet on Friday. Still, CD's accounted for 3 of 29 finishers.

Nicely done!

Post by Stan W. »

Congratulations to all. It is nice to see Cape Dorys coming home with their share of the hardware.

Neil, I'm sorry I missed seeing you duke it out with that Triton. That must have been a lot of fun--two Alberg 28 footers going head to head in the New England fog and rain.

'Duking it out' in the fog

Post by Joe Myerson »

Hi Stan,

We sorely missed a chance to 'duke it out' with Nonsly, but that might not have been the best way to describe the contest, considering the dense fog that covered the course for most of the race.

It was so foggy that we only saw the Triton once or twice, just after the start. Then it, along with the other CD 28 and just about every other boat disappeared into the murk.

Still, it was a fascinating race and a real testimony to Neil's skill as a skipper (helped by Dick Barthel, Joe Montana and yours truly).

Next year I'll remember to bring my deck boots--guaranteeing good weather and, therefore, a bigger field of CDs.

I would have liked seeing that, too.

We saw the Triton start. They sailed off into the fog and that's the last we saw of them.

Congrats and see you next year

Congratulations Neil, Meghan and Chris -- thank you for preserving the Cape Dory honor and representing us all so well. I am really sorry to have missed the regatta, but somehow discretion and prudence overcame every glimmer of emerging valor. My thanks also to Jeff Benagh who was ready to re-arrange plans, Eric Woodman, who was prepared to crew even on Friday, and Carl Thunberg, who offered to sacrifice a day at the office for the chance at an uncomfortable ride from Salem. It was difficult, but I think we all made the right decision to stay ashore.

I hope very much to participate next year.

Thanks, Leo.

2/3 of my crew needed to get on the road, but Joe Meyerson stayed post race for some necessary mainbrace splicing.

Thanks to all for a great first regatta! While the conditions were not ideal, we still had a great time! We were joking that we felt anyone that found "HS" to start the race deserved a trophy! LOL
It was a true test of skill- with 50 yard visibility. We went from mark-to-mark with nothing but a compass and our chart map...As the smallest boat out there it was pretty daunting when boats like "Green Dragon" and "Wild Thing" just appeared out of the fog...YIKES!
If you were at the BBQ after the race I am sure you all heard me scream when they announced we had won the "Female Skipper" trophy...I am sure you could have heard me even if you were still on the water! LOL
Thanks again to all...GREAT RACE and I hope to see more of you all soon.

Meg,

>>We were joking that we felt anyone that found "HS" to start the race deserved a trophy!<<

Just so the readers understand the visibility on Saturday... at the scheduled start, you could see the "HS" buoy on the starboard side of the line or you could see the committee boat to port... but not both at the same time. It was a little better after the one hour delay, but not much.

>>We went from mark-to-mark with nothing but a compass and our chart map...<<

I'm just curious... did you go behind Sunken Ledge, with the ledge to port and the 2' spot to starboard or did you go outside the ledge taking the long way around? I took the longer but safer way through Western Way, where all I had to worry about was getting run down by the high speed ferry.

Hi Neil -

I am not sure. To be honest, we had only sailed around those islands once prior to the race, and we are still learning all the names, locations, markers, etc...The fog made everything look so alien! At one point on our way over from Cottage Park my husband thought we had already made it to George's Island...To our shock/horror it was a TANKER moored out there!

If I had a strategy to share it would have been one of a few things:
1. Don't run aground
2. Don't hit anyone
3. Obey the markers
4. Don't be afriad to yell STARBOARD! (we haven't really finished paying for our boat yet, so I never take chances) ;)

I suppose if you are going to meet a tanker in the Boston main channel, meeting one that's moored is lots better than meeting one that's moving.
