local woodworker in kemah texas to fix bowsprit

Post by Ocean Girl »

I'm in the process of purchasing the CD30 Lauren Leigh. I am concerned that the insurance company wont cover me due to the rotten bowsprit until I repair it. But I don't want to close on the boat until she is fully covered because of all the hurricanes percolating out there. So I was wondering if the local Cape dory owners might have experience with one of the local woodworkers who might of repaired their bowsprit.
The survey is next week and then I'll send the survey on to the insurance co.
This may be worry for nothing, maybe they'll insure with the stipulation that I don't take her out until repairs are done ( sounds pretty unlikely) or maybe they say nothing at all ( even more unlikely). I just want to be ready for this. Any advice will be much appreciated.
I just want to say what a great message board/web site this is. Your postings about bowsprits, electrical, even stove repair has been like gold for me-Thanks

Erika (hopefully soon to be the proud owner of a CD30)

I wouldnt worry that much about coverage. Your survey will find lots of other things too. Once your insurance company receives the survey they will tell you which things must be fixed (and the bowsprit will be included). They will cover you right away and you will expect to see to their list of things to fix right away.

I certainly would not pay to fix the bowsprit until the boat is yours! Dont pay to fix someone elses boat. If its a serious concern of yours and post survey the insurance company for some odd reason wont cover you due to it, then you can easily walk away from the boat or you can stipulate in the contract that the current owner must repair the bowsprit before you close. But, I would not do it that way, such a major repair you want on your terms, you want to supervise. It is ussually better, post survey, to knock money off the boats price and take it as is and oversee or do the repairs yourself, unless of course something catostrophic is found in which case you walk away and eat the cost of the survey.

As for local woodworker, I cannot help you there specificly. If no one on this board suggests anyone, you can ask around the boatyard. A great source of info as well will be your surveyor. When they spot the rotted bowsprit, simply ask about local shipwrights they know who are qualified to do the repair, the surveyor should be able to give you a list of people.

Good luck on the survey.

Thanks for the feed back. She needs a lot of work so I'm sure your right about more coming on the survey. For some reason I thought that if it was structural, the insurance company required repair before coverage. Maybe I'm remembering a below the water line situation which would make more sense. I have been away from boats for 8 years so I'm a little rusty.
Anyways, thanks for the input.

If, when it comes time for repairs, you still need....

someone, this guy, while a little ways away @ the Port Lavaca area, can do excellent work for you I'm sure. He's a retired furniture restorer and current boat builder/repairer:

Charlie Jones

This is a pic of his own boat, a Rhodes Meridian, BEFORE he started her restoration (looking aft in the cabin):

That's the most incredible before and after shots I've ever seen. That boat was trashed!
