Outboard motor replacement for CD25 - great solution

Post by Jim Shriner »

I just installed a Tohatsu 8 HP 20" shaft electric start outboard on my CD 25 to replace the 20 year old 7.5HP Evinrude Yachtmaster. It fit great, has more then enough depth, and with the through the prop exhaust, is quiet, smooth and virtually smokeless. This motor was also substantially less expensive then anything else comparable. The only problem is that the battery cables are about 3 feet too short, nothing I can't fix with a visit to the local auto supply store.

Careful using non-marine grade wiring if you're in a salty environment.

I just repowered with a Nissan (bought out Tohatsu) 9.8 tillerless fits great and all the things you mentioned. Use ANCOR wiire and shrink wrap. My solution was to mount a amphenol mil spec 3 pin power connector on the bulkhead and the plug on the motor so that a bulk of the witring stays away from major weather and it gives me the portability to disconnect the motor alternator if battery overcharge is detected.

I just installed a Yamaha 8 HP 20" shaft outboard to replace Evinrude 9.9HP. Fits in well with room to turn - great for backward maneuvers. Enough power and is quiet by comparison. I went with the Yamaha because the fuel to oil ratio is 100:1, less smoke.
