We are considering buying radar. We have a CD 27 and need to find a good place to mount the monitor. Can anyone suggest a place that works well for them on our size boat? Thanks, Linda

installing a radar monitor

Re: installing a radar monitor
Linda - I installed a Raytheon SL-72 "Pathfinder" radar on my CD330. I located the monitor on the binnacle hand rail. This required me to replace the Edson standard rail with an extended "S" shaped unit. The monitor is mounted directly above the compass with cables running up the binnacle.
I also created a monitoring station at the navigation station. I posted an earlier message which detailed the hook ups for running dual cables which you could access via search function. I have found the helm mounted station to be very beneficial as I also have my GPS data displayed on the radar via the communication cable. This allows me to leave the GPS mounted at the navigation station, yet monitor the position and waypoint data from the helm.
Please feel free to send me an e-mail if you would like further details.

Re: installing a radar monitor
We installed a Raytheon LCD radar unit on our 25D by mounting a swing bracket to the frame on the companionway as close to the top and still clear the hatch. Also as close to the side (1/2") so you can still get up and down the companionway. We cut a "U " shaped wood strip and mounted it on the inside of the cabin top to cover the cable from the transmitter. We also mounted our GPS the same way below the radar. With two seperate mounts you can use both , one or none at any time. You can see both units from either side of the cockpit. A sturdy mount is required to eliminate vibration .Linda wrote: We are considering buying radar. We have a CD 27 and need to find a good place to mount the monitor. Re: installing a radar monitor
Linda,
I have a CD27 with a Furuno 1621 Radar. Mounted the Radar on the stern using a chopped down Forespar mounting kit. Ran the cable through the starboard vent, then around to port and into to the galley. Left enough cable to allow bringing the monitor out into the cockpit. With some Velcro attached to the monitor mounting bracket, I lay the monitor base onto my port cockpit cushion, and fix the monitor bracket to the bulkhead, where I've placed the mating Velcro strip. The Autopilot controller is located just above the Radar monitor. Athough this configuration may sound hokey, it works very nicely.
When not in use, which is most of the time, I coil up the cable and place monitor and cable in the aft port shelf, out of harms way.
I considered a swinging bracket, but felt that it would be in the way and excessive, given it's infrequent use.
I've not regretted my decision for the stern mounted configuration. I worried that it might be too low and that range would be compromised, but it's works well for ranges up to 8 miles, give or take. It also provides easy access, and I don't worry that the Marina will smash it to bits when they step and unstep the mast.
Good Luck with your decision.

Re: installing a radar monitor
The installation you describe is how we want to do it on our CD36.jerry wrote: Hi Jerry,
Could you give me a few details on the mounts? Where did you buy them
and what lengths did you use?
