Free Carl Alberg Boat

This is a bit of a story. I had a few thousand dollars saved to buy a boat. Someone gave me a 23' Kenner Kittiwake full keel boat. It is very similar in design to the CD's and it is said to be made of a Carl Alberg mold. I was going to use the money that I saved to get it into ship shape. A few days after getting this boat, I found my CD25 and bought it because it was a great deal, I always wanted one, and the work on it was for the most part done.

Now I have this Kenner sitting on a Mooring. I tried a couple of the nationwide Charities and also a Local Charity and none of them even took a look at the boat. I put it on Ebay, and it got bid up to $810 but now I'm thinking that the buyer who is from Canada is attempting to scam me so I'm expecting a cashiers check scam in the mail tomorrow or Saturday.

Here is my dilemma. This really is a great boat for the right person, but I can't even give it away for free. I don't have the resources to care for two boats. I think I'm faced with having to bring the Kenner to the dump. I can salvage parts and even the sails off of it for the CD25, but it almost feels sinful to destroy a work of art like this Kenner. The boat is worn and tired, but it has great character and potential. It can even be sailed the way it is.

Does anyone have any suggestions that I haven't tried, before I go strip it of hardware and have it taken to the dump? Keeping it at the mooring is costing me because I need to get the CD out of the slip and on to that mooring.

Have you tried Craigs List? There is a free section as well as a boats section, best of all it costs nothing to advertise! I would bet someone will take it for free.

There are also local "Freecycle" groups. That allow you to advertise stuff for free. Most local Freecycle groups are on Yahoo and require you to have a Yahoo account and register. It's free but a little more work than Craigs list. I have given away lots of stuff on Freecycle, it's better than sending it to the landfill!

Thanks for your repsponse. Those are good ideas. I'll try craigslist. I'm a little worried about all of the flakes out there, but I guess at this point I should give it a try.

If you can hold onto the boat for another month or so I would list it with Good Old Boat. They sold a Helms 25 for me and their magazine is widely read.

From the photos the Kenner certainly looks like one that could be refurbished and it's a shame to see it sent to the trash dump.
