CD 33 Riding sail

Post by noah »

My CD 33 seems to "hunt" while tied to a mooring in light wind. I know that the smaller Cape Dorys move alot but is a riding sail a must in a heavy wind for a 33?

we have a 25D, that like all sloops, sails around on anchor. So we made a riding sail from a Sailrite kit. Worked fairly well.. I then found the easiest method. I drop and set the anchor and then walk the rode around to the stern. No more sailing on anchor....

riding sail

Noah:
I use a riding sail all the time on my CD 36.

It cuts down on most of the hunting in strong winds especially when the clew is tied off to the rail on the side that the anchor rode is attached to. She still wiggles about but doesn't go as far as with-out it. During storms at anchor, the riding sail helps take pressure off the rode by not allowing the bow to jerk as hard or as often during sudden wind shifts. It also helps you and others pick out your boat in crowded anchorages.

I made the sail out of an old, blown-out CD Typhoon's 100% jib to the Sailrite dimensions of 72"x75"x58".

This size riding sail served me well for the past four years but for this coming season, I made a bigger one out of a less baggy material, (a newer and heavier old sail), which I hope will work even better. The new size is 108"x108"x80". The short side is the luff and is attached to the back stay. We will see if the larger size makes any significant difference but I think it should slow the hunting down even more.

As far as Randy's suggestion of anchoring from the stern, I think it would work fine but in our anchorages it could cause all sorts of confusion to the other boaters, especially on weekends.

Our CD32 likes to "hunt" and sail around while moored or at anchor too. Here she is sporting her riding sail.
