Campbell Sailor Prop/Dripless Packing Report

Post by Lee H. Hodsdon »

Well, I'm finally in the water. Here is a brief report on two upgrades, the Capmbell prop and dripless packing. The prop was in use for about one hour. First I backed off the hauler into a 15 to 20 kt breeze with no problem at all. I am quite certain the backing performance was superior to the old oversized Michigan prop. The boat (CD 25D, Westerbeke 10-2) made 5.5 knots into the wind at 3000 rpm, 5.9 to 6.0 at full throttle, 3600 rpm. With the Michigan, which was very oversized I could only reach 2750 rpm max, and this was accompained with overheating and sooty exhaust.

The packing leaked a little, because I was alone I didn't take the chance of adjusting while underway. I had this vision of being trapped in the port locker, on autopilot, with wrenches in hand just waiting for the crash -- so I'll wait for Carol to assist me. The stuffing box did not get hot. All things considered, a good day on the bay.

I'll try the prop into a current this weekend, but I'm real pleased with everything.

Fair winds and following seas,

Lee

Brewer,

This weekend the sails will be up, and I'll give it the most important test, drag under sail.
