CD22 fuel tank locker is too small for new fuel tanks!

Post by Gary M »

You may have noticed an earlier post where I need to repair an old steel fuel tank.

I also need to buy a replacement and am finding that the new tanks are 9" to 10" high and my locker is about 8 1/4" high.

I've ordered the shortest one I can find from WM but I fear once I add the fuel line fitting, it too will be too tall for the locker.

I've put this out to my dock mates and have gotten several suggestions.

* Heat up the new plastic tank and collapse it an inch with presser from the top!

* Cut an inch out of the middle of a new plastic tank and epoxy it back together.

* Have a new tank made out of SS.

* Cut the floor out of the fuel locker and lower the floor a couple of inches.

I hope some CD 22 ownere's have all ready solved this problem, hopefully just by finding a tank in their area that fits.

Meanwhile, I'm grateful that there is no problem sailing in and out of my slip, but for now no more evening harbor cruises under power.

Thanks
Gary

Dura Tank

Post by Roy J. »

Gary,

This 6 gal tank fits inthe locker of Auburn CD-25, where the stock offerings of WM were too tall. The price offered in this link is a lot less than I paid to my local Johnson Evinrude distributor.http://shop.allenmarinesalesservice.com ... ode=177001 or if that insert didn't work, here is the url http://shop.allenmarinesalesservice.com ... ode=177001. You may need a different fitting for your fuel line. But I have used 2 of these for the past four years with good results.

If you absolutely cannot find a plastic tank that will fit then I would suggest having a new one made out of aluminium (why spend all that money on SS in this case?). It should be pretty affordable.

The various suggestions which have been made to you about modifying a plastic tank sound to me very bad ideas which one might live to regret.

I'm in the process of finding some one to build the tank

Post by Gary M »

Russell
My handy dandy local marine directory lists two companies that makes tanks, so far neither have returned calls or emails. Not a good start.

Roy,
I remeasured my tank locker and my first measurement was off, I have less then 8" with the lid closed. First measurement I didn't alow for the hatch.

I'd love to fit a 6 gallon tank in there but I doubt if there is one around the measures 7 3/4 inch to the top of all fittings. I checked your link and it didn't give measurements, maybe I'll email them.

Thanks all

I think it will fit

Post by Roy J. »

Gary,

I am pretty sure that the CD-25 has 8" of clearance in the aft lazarette, and I can't remember where I found the dimensions for the Dura-Tank, possibly the Evinrude-Johnson-Bombadier website. Anyway, I will measure tonight and post dimensions later. With my 8hp 2-stroke Johnson, I need the fuel so the unmentionable smaller capacity tank above wouldn't have worked, but if you have a 4-stroke, it should be unmentionably perfect. I would also check with a website called outboardwizard http://theoutboardwizard.bizhosting.com/index.html, which specializes in Johnson Evinrude -- they may have a new 3 gal Dura-Tank, if the other way doesn't turn out.

Anyway, dimensions to follow tomorrow.

3 gallon duratank

Post by Gary M »

Roy,
I think your right. I called outboard wizard and they are out of stock but they looked up the dimensions of the shipping box. They told me it was 7.7 inches high.

I very carefully remeasued my locker paying particular attention to the middle of the locker where the tank is the tallest. As near as I can tell I have 7 13/16th inches of height.

It sounds like it will fit with almost nothing left over.

I'm trying to find a local outlet but if I can't I'll order from wizard tomorrow. If the tank fits I'll order a second!

I really appreciate the help from you and everyone else. There are no words that can explain how much this board has helped me.

Thanks,
Gary

Local Source - Johnson Evinrude dealer

Post by Roy J. »

Your local Dura-Tank source will likely be the Johnson Evinrude dealer near you. That's where I got mine. I am glad you got the dimensions from OutboardWizard because I forgot to measure last night after our evening sail -- the sunset was too beautiful, and Roberta's wine choice was perfect. We are going back tonight, and hopefully my memory will stay with me long enough to get the tape measure out.

No local source in Los Angeles!

Post by Gary M »

Roy,
I called every Johnson Outboard dealer in the area. No one had the tank and no one wanted to order the tank except for one guy about a 2hour drive away and my van gets 10MPG!

I ordered from Wizard this morning. I should have it in about 10 days. Until then I'll be sailing in and out of my slip like I normally do.

Thanks again.

Sorry -- Dura-Tank Height is 10.25"

Post by Roy J. »

The depth of the aft motor well of a CD-25 is 10.50". The height of the hatch adds another 1.75". The Dura Tank is 10.25" at the highest point. I hope you can cancel the order or re-check the height of the CD-22 well.

Found an old steel 3 gallon tank!

Post by Gary M »

I posted an ad on Craig's List and got a reply in 5 minutes.

I bought his 3 gallon metal tank in good condition for $20.00.

The new tank has a hose barb and my old tank had a quick connect fitting. I'm going to see if I can find a 1/2 inch pipe to 5/16th barb and a short bit of hose to connect everything together.

Otherwise I can cut the quick connect off of my hose and just push it on the barb, once I find the ID of my hose.

So I'm pretty happy this morning.

Gary

BTW Roy, your measurement is for a 6 gallon tank, I ordered a 3 gallon tank and the box measures 7.7 inches high.

I found two tanks that fit a CD22's locker

Post by Gary M »

Just for the record for the next CD22 with this issue.

West Marine's web site (not there catalogue or their store) sells a 3 gallon tank, a Scepter Neptune, manufactured by Moeller #004158 or WM #4543682. This tank is described as being 8" tall.

To make this tank fit I trimmed about 1/8th of an inch of plastic off of the fill cap. The cost is $24.99 plus shipping.

OMC (Johnson / Evenrude) sells the 3 gallon Duratank. This tank is the shortest tank I was able to find at 7.7 inches tall. It has no manual vent on the fill cap, instead this cap vents without you manually opening a valve. I tested it today and it was venting properly. If you don't have a Johnson motor you will have to by a quick connect for your hose because this tank comes with a standard Johnson quick connect instead of the normal pipe fitting. Duratank #175984, should be available at your local OMC dealer but I ordered it at Lindenhust Outboard Service 631 225 0077 or outboardwizard.com. The cost is $59.99 less 10% plus shipping.

The Duratank has a gauge, the Moeller does not.

Either tank will work but I personally like the Duratank a little better.

These are the only two tanks I was able to find that will fit in my CD22 locker.

If you own a CD22 you might want to consider buying an extra tank just in case these two companies discontinue the tank.
