water coming up through rudder post into cockpit

Post by cvaughan »

Just purchased CD28--1977. Took boat out for the first time yesterday and had water coming up into the cockpit (but not down below) when I had engine going more than half throttle. Did not seem to come in when I was sailing without the engine. Any places I should check first?

My generic CD manual circa 1981 says that a bit of water coming up through the rudder tube is normal. You could try some waterproof grease in there though.

What #? Where do you sail?

Don't worry about the water coming up through the rudder tube. It's normal; even says so in the manual.

Edson sells a rudder tube stuffing box that will stop the water coming up the tube as well as provide a top bearing for the rudder post. I installed one on my Alberg designed Ariel when I got tired of the water sloshing around. TheAriel originally had a plastic bushing in the top of the rudder tube that both supported the shaft and deterred the water from coming into the cockpit but this was a cheap fix and did not last the 30+ years the boat saw service. Check with Edson to see if they still make it. I epoxyed mine to the top of the rudder tube, wrapping it with fiberglass tape, 3" I think. A very neat job which worked very well. I painted over the epoxy when cured to protect it from UV deterioration.
