How do I mount my Fortress Anchor with Mud Palms?

Post by henry hey »

Hi,

I have a beautiful new Fortress FX-11 for my CD25. The previous anchor mount (for my old danforth) would hang the anchor from the stock. Unfortunately, those little clips were flimsy and the anchor came out and flopped around the deck in a blow -- not what I wanted to see.

I bought a rail (bow pulpit) bracket type mount only to discover that once the Fortress had it's mud palms installed (especially good for long island sound mud) it would not hang in this bracket.

I called Fortress and they confirmed that this was an issue and that they didn't have a clear answer. They said they had been trying to get windline to make a bracket for their anchor for some time with no success.

Any thoughts (other than buying a bow roller?)

Anchor mount

Post by Dave Brandt »

Hi Henry,

I have a Fortress as a second anchor and I mounted it on the aft rail using bracket that fits around the rail with a hole in it. I used a long 3/8" bolt with the head cut off and bent at 90 deg. through the hole in the bracket, the anchor slides down over the bolt. I drilled a hole in the end of the bolt and put a pin through it. Simple and works good.

This would make more sense with a photo, but I don't have one. let me know if you want more info.

My own fix for the Fortress

Post by henry hey »

I had already purchased a Windline bracket mount for my anchor and I HATE to have anything that I paid for go to waste.

SO. . . I got out the dremel with the cutoff blade and went to work on it.

I modified this mount so it would fit around the mud palms.

The results are here:

Mud Palms

Post by Chuck »

Now, that's good information. I went thru the same thing with Fortress, and no mount is available. So, I have used the anchor with only one mud palm, being carefully on how it settled to the bottom. but now ...
Thanks,

Does anyone have any experience with a Windline Rail Mount Anchor Bracket for a Danforth anchor similar to the one shown on this website :?:

http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/us ... o?pid=9044

I recently installed a Harken Mark IV, Unit 0, furler and attached a 12" Schaefer shaft from the bow stem to the base of the drum to raise the drum off the deck a little so that I could more easily access the anchor and bow roller.

I am thinking of either installing some type of bow bracket for my primary Danforth like the one depicted in the Jamestown Distributors website or routing it back to the stern rail similar to the way David Patterson depicted in one of his drawings on his "cruising the San Juans" thread at:

Thoughts :?:

Just one more thing to consider, when mounting an anchor, is that it could become a sail shredder if mounted on the bow pulpit. If you are ever planning to run any down wind sails, be very careful or take the anchor off the bracket first. Even though deck space is limited I would be inclined to use a deck mount if I couldn't store my anchor on a roller. The other option is to keep it on the stern rail, Steve.

I keep my anchor inside the cockpit locker. The rode outside of everything, so it's easy to drop the hook, especially for single handers.

Hi Robert,

I use the bracket you linked to for two Fortress anchors on my bow pulpit. In the first year, I used a horizontal mount, as shown in your link. I was not able to avoid contact with an eased out sail with the horizontal bracket, so I have switched to vertical mounts. Much better. I have pad eyes screwed into the rail directly in line with the anchor brackets. I tie a short line to the pad eyes to secure the anchor in the bracket. I tie the line around the anchor swivel. I find that care is needed not to get the shackle and swivel "kinked" when deploying the anchor.

I also keep a Delta Anchor in a cockpit lazarette. So far, I am using a West Marine Anchor Rode bag. I'd like to make a wooden bracket for an anchor roller forward.
