Dan,

The lower shroud should be attached to the aft chainplate. The upper shroud should be attached to the forward chainplate. The idea is that the lower shroud (the one which attaches to about the middle of the mast) keeps the mast from bending forward in the middle under sail. It also keeps the middle of the mast from bending off to the side. this can accomplish this best when the lower shroud is attached a little aft. Likewise the upper shroud function is to keep the upper part of the mast from bending off to the side. It can do this best if it is at a fairly right angle to the mast. Soory to overdue the detail of the explaination. I did check with the Cape Dory manual and this is what is shown of the rigging plan for the Typhoon.

Dan,

Attach the lower shroud (the one attached halfway up the mast) to the aft chainplate. The upper shroud (the one attached at the top of the mast) is to be attached to the forward chainplate. The lower shroud will keep the mast from bending forward in the midddle as well as off to the side when under sail. This can be done best when it is located slightly aft. I checked with the Cape Dory Manual and this is what is shown for the Typhoon rigging.

Ok, SHROUDS. (everybody still knew what he meant. Now I'm going to get on my boat, go downstairs, and into the bathroom at the front-end of my boat.)
