MuFFLER SHELF

Post by Zeida »

Hi, Warren

This is the shelf I made to reposition the muffler. It used to sit on a very heavy metal base with a brackett bolted to the side of my tranny. But those bolts were always loose, falling off, the holes were not properly drilled, the brackett was always banging in there and the muffler in the platform swinging along, supported only by the hoses. So the decision to make a separate shelf altogether:

a corner of the old metal platform

measuring and remeasuring to make sure it would all go where it should...

scraping the paint off and putting strips of epoxy to glue shelf in place.http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sra ... 93.jpg[img]
I did it in pieces... otherwise could not get to the bottom of it...

loaded with epoxy to make sure it would stay put... it has!

now the top part was screwed on...

rubber mat placed to help minimize vibration. It works.
[/img]muffler now installed in new shelf. :D
I made a sample shelf of cardboard first, to make sure I had the correct curve of the hull. Very careful preparations and thought went into it, and then, I almost missed the final exact position! Overnight, while the epoxy was still curing, the shelf slipped forward about 1/2 inch towards the tranny! Another half inch and it would have ended ON TOP of the tranny, making access to it impossible. As it is now, I can still get the tranny in and out with no problem, but it was the luck of the novice!

Thanks for posting these. I'm pullng the transmission in the next few weeks to rebuild it. Now's a good time to relocate the muffler if it makes sense.
