We have a CD 40 and are contemplating removing the staysail boom and installing sheet tracks for the staysail parallel to the mast on both sides of the cabin top at the turn of the cabin top, planning to use 1 1/4 T-track and low profile sheet blocks to run 1/2" sheets from a free footed staysail to winches on the cabin top, port and starboard. Our intentions are to use the staysail primarily as a heavy weather sail - our other goal is eleminate deck clutter caused by the staysail boom. We would solicit any comments or suggestions.

Staysail Boom Removal

Re: Staysail Boom Removal
We don't have a CD40 but do have a 30 and we also removed the clubfoot for the same reason. I suggest you review the staysail rigging alternatives in the back of the Harken catalog. They have about 3 or 4 versions depending on expected needs and uses. We opted for version #2 using a single sheet. Will (Como No) wrote: We have a CD 40 and are contemplating removing the staysail boom and installing sheet tracks for the staysail parallel to the mast on both sides of the cabin top at the turn of the cabin top, planning to use 1 1/4 T-track and low profile sheet blocks to run 1/2" sheets from a free footed staysail to winches on the cabin top, port and starboard. Re: Staysail Boom Removal
my 40 sails pretty well in heavy weather with the club foot staysail. I guess you want even more performance? other than potential leaks and gel coat cracks, I imagine it should work fine. be interested to hear more when you have used the setup.
Re: Staysail Boom Removal
We did basically what you are thinking of doing, except we were able to use our genoa sheet winches, port & starboard, for the staysail sheets also. We did install two extra turning blocks on top of the existing genoa sheet blocks, so that when we head out, we are able to reeve both the genoa and staysail sheets back to the cockpit, which means, finally, that we have access to both geonoa & staysails without having to go up on deck.
I've done plenty of sailing with just that little staysail and I really really like it a lot.
