Typhoon Weekender for sale, Camden, ME

Sad to let this go, but not enough time to use her properly. Hull #140, so I think built in 1970, named Carny. She was in Camden Harbor for the last 6 or 7 summers, hauled and covered each winter. Sat on stands this summer. Some cosmetic cracks in deck (hey, she's #140!) but cabin top is still true (not sagging from over tight standing rigging). Main, 2 or 3 foresails, spinnaker, 2 hp Johnson. Asking $2900.

I'm working on getting pictures.

Here's more about this boat...

Post by ekfeldborg »

My account is functional again. Sorry about posting under "guest". It did feel impersonal. My name is Eric.

Correction, Hull # is 141.

101 views and I have not received any contact of interest, so I am looking for feedback. Looking through old postings, everyone raves about Typhoons. Each one posted in the last few months appears to have sold. All indications suggest this is a desirable boat, so why no action? Help, please!

Is the email address accepting messages? Is the asking price too high?

Here's some more info about the boat and it's most recent owner. It was owned most recently by my uncle, a lifelong sailor who, after a stint in the Navy, did the San Francisco - Hawaii race in the mid 1960's (no GPS). He did that race twice. The guy owned multiple sailboats for most of his life. He loved sailing, chose his boats carefully and took great care of them. He was supersticious as well. He never changed the name or hull color of any boat during the time she was in his care. In fact that's how he thought of ownership, not as owning, but as temporarily caretaker.

At 78, he was killed this spring when a moose jumped (the hoof prints told the story) in front of his car. Earlier that day, he has sanded the textured portions of the deck for its annual coat of textured top paint. I'll bet he was pissed that he didn't have time enough to finish it in one day.

Anyway, my aunt offered me Carny, but after much internal debate, I admit that at this point in my life I cannot sail her often enough to be her proper custodian. That's why she is being sold. I apologize for standing on the line of appealing to sympathy, but that is not my intent. The next owner should know these things and treat her accordingly.

So, folks, this boat needs to be sold. Any suggestions, questions or offers are welcome. Please reply directly on this board, since it is teh easiest for me to access.

Thanks,
Eric in NH

erik,

sorry about your grandfather, he sounds interesting. it also sounds as if cape dory typhoons are pretty common on the east coast. they are not so common out west.

maybe keeping your grandfather's typhoon wouldn't be such a bad idea. i have a victoria 18 that i keep parked on a trailer and which has been enjoyed pretty much where it sits for six years so far. these boats are so beautiful--take your time and enjoy it.

good luck and take care.

Eric,

I will be in Camden over Labor Day weekend and would like to look at the boat if it is still available then. I sent you a note via e-mail with additional information.

Sorry about your uncle. As for getting more interest in his Typhoon, pictures are always great. If you could post some elsewhere and then post a link to this board, interested parties might get more interested.

Price seems fair. My guess about the responses in no particular order are (1) time of year being the end of summer; (2) no trailer is mentioned and (3) Camden, ME is not "central" or easy to get to.

My best guess is some person locally along the Maine coast is the most likely buyer. I just saw three Typhoons in the BoothBay Harbor area last weekend.

Good luck.
