West Marine Boarding Ladders for a Typhoon?

Post by Mike Wainfeld »

I was in West Marine today and saw a nicely fabricated SS boarding ladder to hang off the gunwhale. Anyone have any experience with one of these on a Typhoon?

Thanks,

Mike,
Didn't use their's but had a rigid one. Gave it away...just one more piece of stuff that wouldn't stow well below. Currently very happy with one of the rope and step versions. Collapses into a tiny stack for storage. Just have to remember the trick of stepping on the bottom step in the water first. This gets the swimmer into a vertical position and able to climb up in a normal fashion. Stepping on a step above the bottom causes the ladder to wrap under the hull making it very awkward. We hang ours from one of the cleats on the cabin top.

I just bought a boarding ladder for our 25D from Ocean Engineering/Johnson. They are the OEM for CD boarding ladders. They had excellent workmanship and all the prints for all the ladders. The number can be found by searching this board.

Mike, I made a 100% rope ladder with rungs about 4-inches wide, out of 1/4-inch line. I hang it off a winch and have tested it. I find it virtually as easy to just climb aboard my Typhoon as to use the ladder. Out of Seattle, boarding ladders are mostly for safety, not swimming. I would test any rope ladder in advance for use with a Typhoon because the hull curves away so quickly, the ladder might not help. I am thinking of how I could arrach somthing to the motor bracket?
