Need a new compass

Post by Rich »

Can anyone recommend a replacement compass for a CD26? We just acquired the boat and I'm going from memory here, but it looks like a OEM compass, bulkhead mounted. Is there a standard opening size for bulkhead compasses? Does anyone have a recommendation for a replacement brand/type/source?

We have had good luck and performance from our Aqua Meter Gemini #182 bulkhead compass. It is the 4-1/2 inch "flat card" version with lubber lines, lighted, reverse course indicator, compensators, and clinometer. Have had it since the boat was new and as long as you have a compass cover it will last many years. This is about a 6-5/8 inch diameter unit. A smaller unit (5-5/8", 4 inch hole) is the Aquameter Saturn 142. Both are very stable in a rough sea. Having owned both compasses on two different boats, I would recommend the Gemini for the proper CD26 size.

Generally, the size of compasses are in fairly standard sizes. The equilivant for the Aquameter, for instance, is the Richie Sail and Navigator series. You may also consider a back cover for the boat interior. The saturn will be about $54 and the Gemini about $130 depending on your purchase source.
