Welcome to the new Cape Dory Board

Post by Cathy Monaghan »

Well, it took us alot longer than we had anticipated to migrate the board from the old format to the new, but with the hard work and perseverance of your web team it is finally here.

All of the messages from the original board are here and that includes the archives. If you scroll to the bottom of the "Main Forum" you'll see:

Goto page 1, 2, 3 ... 291, 292, 293 Next

You can click on any of those page numbers at the bottom of the board, on Previous or Next to navigate through the board but using "Search", located in the toolbar near the top of the page will get you there quicker.

Be sure to click on the "<a href="http://capedory.org/board/whaaa.html"><b>Need help starting?</b></a>" link for basic instructions in the use of this board. You'll find more detailed help in the <a href="http://capedory.org/board/userguide.html"><b>Users Guide</b></a>.

Any visitor to the board can read messages, reply, post, and search. You can do that right now.

Sooner or later, you may choose to become a registered user. That will give you other optional features - automatically displaying your name and boat with your posts, letting you edit your posts, delete them, and a lot more.

You can deal with that later, or not at all. Remember, everything you could do on the old board, you can still do right now.

If you want to <a href="http://www.phpbb.com/support/tutorials/ ... ><b>become a registered user</b></a> and take advantage of the board's new features, you'll have to provide your email address, but we won't use it for anything off the board and it's protected from robots and spammers. It's up to you.

When you register you'll create a profile which you can edit at any time using "<a href="http://www.phpbb.com/support/tutorials/ ... e"><b>Your Settings</b></a>" located in the toolbar near the top of the board.

If you have any questions regarding how to use the board, please post them in the "<a href="http://capedory.org/board/viewforum.php?f=2"><b>About this Board</b></a>" forum and we'll get back to you as soon as we can.

In case anybody hasn't noticed and still needs help, in addition to "<a href="http://www.capedory.org/board/whaaa.html">"Need help starting?"</a>" and the "<a href="http://www.capedory.org/board/userguide.html">Users Guide</a>", you'll find some instructions regarding the different board <b>layouts</b> (choose the view you like), the use of <b>avatars</b>, and how to include <b>photos or graphics</b> within your posts in the "<a href="http://www.capedory.org/board/viewforum.php?f=2">About this Board</a>" forum.

If you want to practice using the board before actually posting a question or comment, please use the <a href="http://www.capedory.org/board/viewforum ... box</b></a> forum.

The old board had around 65,000 actual posts and 1.7 million visits.

The original archive file that held the posts was 75MB.

The conversion process took 1.5 hours to run and generated a new archive file compatible with the new board. This archive file was 500MB!

Adding to Bob's comments ...

The new board takes about three times as much space on the server as the old board did. But we have a lot more space in this account than we did on the old Internet Service Provider we left a year back.

Some more statistics -

We all spent about 11 hours at (or near) our computers yesterday while we wrestled with little glitches in the conversion process and in the server. Then I took another couple hours and finished up. Then Cathy picked it up this morning for a couple of hours of testing. (A lot of my time was uploading and downloading - but these other guys actually worked. :) )

My combined uploads and downloads during that time totalled somewhere north of 1.2 gigabytes. Most of that data was gzipped - it was probably around 12 gigabytes uncompressed.

For those of you who watch the visits counter, now down at the bottom of the home page - we left the old board with 1,684,864 views. Now, these are not visits - the counter bumped every time someone came back to the main page and reloaded. We were averaging about 1,200 views a day.

On the new board, the counter registers visits. From the time you arrive until you leave (or don't do anything for five minutes) is one count. So it should move slower.

That said, we've had over 200 visits in the first few hours.

Interesting....
If you still have the orignal, I would be happy to host it in case people flip over the new format and want the old back. I know someone said that if it was switched back the archives would have to go.... a less than great idea I think.
Anyhow, 75 or 500 mb I have PLENTY of room for.

Cheers.

Dunno. Did you double-click on "Submit"?

I can tell you they were posted 24 seconds apart ...

I'll delete one of them.

Don't forget! With this new board registered users can edit and/or delete their own posts. So if you made a mistake, you can go back and fix it.

Have fun,
