stern light for Cape Dory 28FB power

On my newly acquired CD 28 power I find no stern light on the transom. Can I assume that the 360deg light on a stalk on the FB serves dual purpose as a masthead light and stern light?

My DC28 FB hull #124 has a Flush-Mount Stern Light (Attwood 6356D3) mounted in the transom and a post mounted 225 degree white light just forward of the Flybridge and about even with the top of windshield. Most of the others I have seen are rigged the same as mine. I like the way mine is set up but I'm sure there are othe alternatives.

Bill,
Print this post. The address listed is extensive. The Federal Requirements for navigation lights are shown at the Coast Guard web site: http://www.uscgboating.org/fedreg/page2 ... #navlights .

As I read the reg's, vessels less than 12 meters(which includes your vessel at 28 feet) in length, may show an all around masthead white light and port and starboard running lights up forward. The masthead light must be at least 1 meter above the red and green side lights.

So, in answer to your question, although I am just a "sea" lawyer and not responsible for any of this, you are probably legal as the vessel is equipped now. Take a look at the Coast Guard site. It's a BIG help. Their main site is http://www.uscg.mil

Hope I was of assistance....

My CD 28 Flybr has yet another twist. I have the 120 degree transom light and the short mast forward of the flybridge with the 270 degree white light. However, I also have a 40" mast that mounts into a socket in the flybridge dash and it is wired to be a 360 degree "anchor light". The switch on the lower station is a three position swith. Position 1.(left) "Nav lights" activates the green, red, stern white and short mast 270 degree white. Position 2.(center) is all off.
Position 3 (right)"Anchor Light" activates the tall mast with the 360 light from the dash.
Just more input.

I assume you are talking about the removable white light on a stalk that plugs into the socket on the flybridge console. This is an anchor light, although you might be able to turn it on at the same time as the nav lights.

Dave is correct - on boats under 12 meters, the all-round white light can substitute for the more normal configuration of a 225 degree white light forward and a 135 degree white light on the transom.

However, this is a poor arrangement. While underway at night, it will wreak havoc with your night vision. Almost all powerboats have a white light forward and a transom light. If you plan to operate at night, you might want to install a transom light, and also to make sure that the forward white light is shielded so that it is not visible from the flybridge.

Walt,

Good point about visibility at night! Because I'm sail, I don't really think too much about night vision. The cockpit is DARK unless Carol comes up from below with the flood light ON to spot bouys as we go in to some unknown port. I agree with you, the better arrangement is a stern light with running lights! This is probably all that is necessary (read that required) on a 28 footer, but one can never be to careful. I'd rather be seen(on any vessel) than hit!
