I am concerned about excessive (grey) smoking on a CD28 Volvo diesel
on a CD powerboat I am considering buying. Recent fuel injectors replacement did not correct. Opinions, advice, experiences most welcomed (desperately needed).
Thanks

CD28Power engine (Volvo TAMD41B) problem...advice???

Re: CD28Power engine (Volvo TAMD41B) problem...advice???
The Volvo TAMD41B is a high rpm diesel. If it is not run at high rpm's it will load up and you will have grey smoke. I run mine at 3500-3600 at cruise. The 41 with the proper prop should top out at 3950 rpm. I do not get anything out of my turbo to over 3200 rpm. These engines are hurt if they are not run at high rpm over a period of time. Ed,
Grey smoke doesn't sound good to me. Overloads usually occur and produce a black smoke from unburned fuel. Grey/blue smoke is more indicative of ring, valve etc. problems. In honesty, I am not that familiar with Volvos as I have worked on boats with Detroit Diesels and small Yanmars. Check fuel, filters, etc. Just general ideas about diesels. Have you had your mechanic look at it? It may be worth paying for his visit.
Good luck with it.

Re: CD28Power engine (Volvo TAMD41B) problem...advice???
I bought my CD28 Trawler about 3 months ago. It had some grey smoke before I bought it and still has some grey smoke, particularly at high rpm. I asked every one I could (my surveyor and various diesel mechanics-one who worked on the boat before I bought it and another guy I know who hasn't seen the boat) whether the engine had problems. The most consistent answer I got was that grey smoke was indigenous to the volvo TAMD41 engine. Part of it was steam and the other part was not be worried about., ie, if something was slightly imperfect, the cost of making it perfect was not worth it. the engine would last forever, if well maintained. My engine has about 660 hours on it and purrs along quite well.

I spent most of yesterday "researching" the little boat and now believe The Smoke is indeed a warning sign. As a Volvo mechanic said, "Edd, If it were a simple fix, or even a reasonably repairable one, they would have corrected it before they put it on the market!"
I'm going to look a little longer for my CD28 Cruiser.

The older TAMD41A's had a reputation as "smokers" particularly when cold. The TAMD41B's supposedly were somewhat better. My 1988 CD33 has always been somewhat smoky but has run like a charm since new.
