Fellow NJ/NY/CT Area Cape Dorians:
I've begun looking for a place that many of us should be able to get to in order to meet for a rendez vous. Until I find a suitable, reasonably priced place, I'll continue looking. In the meantime, I'll let you know about the places we've visited in case you're interested in trying out a new mooring field, marina or anchorage.
Pier 25, NYC:
July 11th, we set sail for Pier 25 in NYC to check out the new mooring field (which is operated by the Manhattan Yacht Club -- http://www.myc.org/), and the facilities at Pier 25 which is just north of the World Trade Center and directly across from the Jersey City skyline. Yes, we sailed in all that wind -- 30+ kts -- and made it there in one piece. I only had to take evasive maneuvers twice: once to avoid the Staten Island ferry, and then to avoid a very fast moving ship that seemingly came out of nowhere, from the East River I think.
Well the mooring field at Pier 25 is small, they've got about 15 moorings total and only a few available for transients at $1/foot. So it wouldn't be suitable for a large gathering of Cape Dorys.
There's a floating dock for their Lightning fleet otherwise docking is not permitted. There is launch service from your mooring to Pier 25. They monitor VHF 69. Make sure you call Pier 25 and not the Manhattan Yacht Club, they won't answer.
Pier 25 is part of Hudson River Park. There's a beach volley ball court, miniature golf, picnic tables and benches, a garden, artwork on display, food concession stands and porta-potties -- no restrooms or shower facilities. The pier is also within walking distance of other eateries and the WTC. The old passenger ferry "Yankee" is also available for tours.
The mooring field is protected from every direction except from the west, which is also the direction the wakes from the big ships come from. We rocked and rolled until a little after midnight when the party boats finally retired for the night. So it wasn't difficult to sleep. The city is beautiful at night and from our mooring we could see the Statue of Liberty, the Colgate clock, the Empire State Building lit in red, white and blue, the Chrysler Building, and of course the looming World Trade Center. It was relatively quiet, I was pleasantly surprised.
For anyone travelling from NJ or the upper reaches of the Hudson, this would be a good stop on the way into Long Island Sound. It's a short trip around the battery and into the East River from Pier 25 and at $1/foot it is relatively inexpensive.

Catherine,
Carol & I sailed from Noank, CT to Montauk Point, NY last weekend. We pulled into Lake Montauk, on the North shore, and stayed at the old Montauk Yacht Club ("old" because it went bankrupt a while ago and is now open to the public). Cost for the slip was $75.00 for a CD-30 per night. Add $5.00 per nite if you want shore power(we didn't). The service was excellent and so too the facilities. There were three dock hands waiting for us as we pulled into the slip and one was waiting to direct us to the right slip in a golf cart on the end of their first pier. The club has 3 swimming pools, two outside and one inside, sauna and they even supply towels! There's even a full service hotel right on the premises so, if you were really sick of sailing, you could get a room for a night or two. There's a small bagel/breakfeast shop for the mornings and a full resturant for dinner. Note that all resturants in the area are on the expensive side 18.00-24.00 per entray. But a good thing is that the club provides a shuttle to anywhere you want to go(within reason)!
Anyhow, it was a very nice two days and the club may be a good spot for a get-together in the future. Also, it's almost due South of Mystic/Noank/New London if anyone wanted to go there or transit through the CT coast communities. Return to Noank took us about 4 1/2hrs working 30 degrees to weather against a N.W. wind 10-15 mph (Montauk is almost exactly 15 miles from my slip in Noank)
