Interesting Boats

Just to swing things back to more classic yachts, here is the 1967 Ohlson 37 Kristin photographed yesterday sailing past Goose Rock Lighthouse, Fox Islands Thorofare, Maine. We tried to keep up with her under sail, but she slowly inched away from our little CD22.

Walking through the boat yard today. Most of the boats here are power boats. Big mega yachts, 90’ sport fishing boats, commercial fish boats (wood and steel). But today I saw a J 125. I have a soft spot for J boats since I had a much loved J 24. Anyway, this particular J125 looks to be set up for cruising. Dodger, bimini, solar arch with two wind generators, solar panels, a a RHIB with big outboard in davits.

A J 125 is 41’ long. 10’8” beam. Draws 8’ of water. Rudder must be nearly 7’ long. About 750 SF sail but only displaces 8,000lbs for a SA/D of 30! Must be a rough ride off shore. Can’t imagine cruising in a boat like this. One grounding with that keel and you are toast.

Anyway, pretty interesting.

I looked at the J 125 again today. I don’t think the spreaders are right. The lower ones should be very slightly angled up bisecting the wire angle between the deck and the tip of the upper spreader. The top spreaders should bisect the the angle of the cap shroud between the lower spreader and where they terminate on the mast. Unless they are swept back spreaders and I don’t think they are.

Spotted this former Navy vessel at Jarrett Bay boatyard, NC. Very neat looking steel 65’ T boat. Built 1953. After government service owned by MIT as research vessel. Now in private hands as recreational boat. I believe she is based out of the Chesapeake Bay area.

Looks tough and capable. Very nice lines.

Yesterday was a gray day--not the best for photography--but when you have a pretty boat like Angelique for a subject, it is easy to forget about all of that. Angelique is a gaff topsail ketch. 90' LOD, 130' LOA. These photos are of her sailing in East Penobscot Bay and the Little Thorofare, Fox Islands, Maine. Here's another interesting boat from yesterday's gray sail: Zingara, a 45-foot canoe-sterned wooden yawl. Designed by Bill Peterson, built by Brooklin Boat Yard in Maine, and launched in 2001. I am constantly amazed by the variety of boats I see out sailing here in Penobscot Bay. Zingara is one-of-a-kind.

Book? I didn't think people bought books anymore. I heard that it's all YouTube and Instagram, or if anyone actually reads (gasp) it's on a Kindle. Our local bookstore has a 4th of July sale today (postponed from the 4th because of rain) for $0.25 per book, or bring a bag and fill it for a dollar. Next thing you know you will be wanting me to invest in buggy whips or...something crazy...like a sailboat without an engine. Oh wait, I already have one of those.

Seriously, thanks, John, you are too kind. In my experience, when the focus of anything you enjoy becomes commercial it ceases to be a pleasure and it becomes a job. I'm retired. The last thing I want to do is work.

Amen to that. A year ago I start Far Reach Voyages LLC. The focus is to help people gain the insights and confidence to sail their boats offshore to the Caribbean. Emphasis on sail not motor down the ICW. I also wanted part of that process to be setting their boats up simple but strong with the emphasis on sailing and not gear and gadgets. In the process I’d save them money and reduce their stress level. Then the pandemic arrived. I put it all on the back burner.

So here I am thinking I should restart that effort but also knowing that sailing work could have an adverse impact on my sailing fun. I have been told by an experienced local sailing instructor that if I advertised my business local to this area my phone won’t stop ringing. I have not done anything yet as as I remain focused on preparing my own boat ready for sailing.
